Great smart lights if they fit your budget

I love LED accent lighting and was excited to see Kasa come out with these. I already have over a dozen other Kasa products – mostly smart light bulbs and a couple smart light switches.PROS:- For me, smart controls with Google devices works well. This is the main reason I paid a big premium for this type of light strip and it was the most important thing for me- Kasa app is easy and intuitive to use- Very easy to install – peel and place, plug and play- Extensions are also very easy to add. You just plug them in to the end of a 6.6′ strip , turn the strip off and on, and the extension acts like an extension (same color, patterns look good, etc.)- Great brightness range- Great color range, including cool and warm whites as well as many, many vivid colorsCONS- Depending on your application, these can get really expensive really fast. Used as accent lighting running the inside perimeter of two 6-foot tall bookcases cost over $300 with tax. And I paid for them with my own money, these were NOT given to me in exchange for a review- Once you cut a strip, the rest of it is trash. For each of my bookcases, I had to cut the last ~16″ of lights off to fit, meaning I threw away about $25 worth of extensions- Strips are not very flexible – you’ll probably need to run them in a straight line. There are no angle adapters available that I know of that would allow a 90 degree turnBoiled down, the pros are the lights perform really well and give you something I don’t think I could easily get from cheaper lights – the ability to control on/off, color, and brightness with my voice. But the cons areyou need to have the right application to pull these off. They are expensive, but the price compares pretty favorably to most of the other smart strip lights out there and you don’t need a hub or anything else at all (other than electricity and a smart device to set them up) to run these lights.I have had pretty good luck with Google controls. The first couple days, connection was a little spotty. But it quickly improved and even if one command did not work (e.g. turn on light), I could use another command (e.g. set light to 20%) and then the strip would respond to everything. Now, it seems to work well and its very rare that I have to do anything special to control the bookshelf lights, which are part of a group with other Kasa lights. If you’re like me, this is the main reason you’re buying these lights. You buy the product in a 6.6′ foot stretch and can add extensions (sold separately in 3.3′ increments). You can’t just buy an extension, the extensions only work with the full 6.6′ strip. So if you are trying to light a 3′ section, you’ll have to buy the 6.6′ strip and basically cut it in half and throw the cut section away. This is annoying because the strips are clearly made in 1.65′ sections and either connected by thin wires or a bulky (0.18″ thick) connector. I wouldn’t mind so much if you could install the strips with a turn (like make a 90 degree angle), but you can’t really do that. Now for the good stuff. The strips are very sturdy. Even though you can tell they are mated about every foot and a half or so, they are encapsulated in a soft clear gel-like plastic. The back has a high quality 3M tape strip. I never once had an issue with the tape not sticking, though I was working on a clean surface.Once installed and turned on, the lights are just what I wanted. Because my lights wrap around the inside of bookshelves (Ikea Hemnes shelves), I get a LOT of light. They very easily light up the shelves and I use them all the time at different brightness for different moods. The patterns are fun but I don’t use them often. Kasa promises to allow custom patterns at some point. I love that you can adjust the white color from warm white to cool white and there are tons of fun colors.I included a few pictures of the brightness taken late at night when it was dark out. I have the two bookshelves, each one with one 6.6′ light strip and 3 extensions (though the last extension is cut in half to fit cleanly). My camera sort of auto-adjusted the brightness but I think you can tell they are very bright. At 100% brightness, they virtually light up my (relatively small) living room.My bookshelves unintentionally have a light rail that helps hide the LED strip so I don’t see the strip itself unless I’m looking at the bookshelves from the side. At less than 0.5″ wide, they do a good job of lighting things up without sticking out.The product description leaves a lot to be desired. More dimensions… the cord from the power outlet to the light strip controller is 22″ long, the cord from the controller to the light strip is 6’10” and 1/8″ in diameter. The thickness of the light strip is 0.18″ at block-like connections on the strip, but only 0.11″ thick at the LEDs. So if you’re trying to run in a bookcase along the sides of shelves, the strip was thin enough for me to fit it between the side wall and the shelf keeping the LEDs hidden. The width of the strip is 0.48″.Overall verdict, if you’re into accent lighting and willing to spend a premium for a slick and stable mobile app and the ability to control everything with your voice, these are awesome lights. Over time, I hope these strips will become more flexible, adapters will be provided to turn the stripOn the other hand, if you don’t ever want to change the color or brightness of the lights, just turn them on/off with your voice, you’d probably save some money by getting a smart electrical plug (Kasa and others make them) and using a normal, significantly cheaper LED light strip (though professional installation, if needed, would cut into those savings).

Very Good, but not without some caveats

This light strip was purchased to replaced my Govee LED strip installed as a TV halo on my 65″ LG. Since an update earlier this year, the Govee app has made connecting the strip to Wi-Fi impossible. Not to mention, the Govee app is just horrible in general. It was time to let it go, so I bought this Kasa Smart LED strip.I already had a Kasa Smart light bulb which works perfectly and whose accompanying app is simple, clean and, best of all, works. It was no-brainer to go with Kasa this time for the LED strip.Good: It’s bright.Has more color options than the Govee.Seems very well made. The app is pleasant to use.Not-so-good: The PU coating on the strip makes it VERY difficult to bend in a 90 degree turn, such as when lighting the rear perimeter of a TV. It is too thick to bend into a right angle at corners without protruding far out from the surface. And, because it doesn’t bend well, the not-very-good adhesive keeps lifting away as the strip gets near the corner. Every time I walk by the TV, I reach back and press the strip down hoping one day it will just stay put all the way. Also not very good is when the light strip is dimmed. I usually keep it in a soft white color (about 4000 kelvin color temperature) and at 100% brightness. When I dim it to about 15% for, say, movies, or whatever, it goes from 4000k to 1000k, which is really orange-looking. The crappy aforementioned Govee did not do this. It handled maintaining color temperature well when it was dimmed. I was bit surprised this seemingly higher quality LED strip did this.Other than those things, it is a well-made strip with a good app, so I will keep it until I find a better LED strip at around the $20-$40 price range.

    Love them!

They look GREAT under our counters!!! They’re inexpensive, flexible, and look awesome. I have them on a schedule to automatically turn on an hour before sunset and turn off by 11pm (hours vary when we’re hosting). There’s no lag/delay when changing the light scenes or turning them off/on. With a little work on Homebridge, they sync well with our other smart devices in Apple HomeKit so I can control them on a dashboard on my iPad. As an added bonus, they can be cut down to size, which we had to do to accommodate a farmhouse-style sink we put in.I’m a big Philips Hue guy, but they’re obscenely expensive. I had originally bought Hue lightstrips to put under the counter and bar in our new outdoor cabana but the strips were HUGE (they stuck out below the counters by an inch or more) and not very flexible. In looking for an alternative smart lighting solution, I came across these Kasa lights — and I am blown away. They’re both a fraction of the cost and size of the Hue lights, with way more flexibility in my opinion. For my application, Kasa is the way to go 100%.

Not as good as the old version

We use Kasa light strips in our kitchen, and we use the older version KL430 lights. Back when we bought those they were the only ones available from Kasa, and they were expensive, and they were short strips. I believe I paid over $50 for 6.6 feet, and then it would be over $20 for every 3 foot extension. So when I saw that Kasa was offering what looked like the same product only updated, for far cheaper, I decided to give them a shot.I ordered the KL420L5 lights, and there are pros and cons. For our household they didn’t ultimately work, as the lumen output/brightness is FAR inferior. Our kitchen is dark and has no windows, so the brightness of the under cabinet lights is a big deal. The old lights are super bright, these new more afforadable ones are barely half the brightness. I cannot use them in the kitchen as they do not illuminate enough. That being said, they use the same app and operate the same way. They talk with Alexa perfectly fine like the older style. We ended up keeping them and using them elsewhere in a spot where we wanted some light but didn’t need to rely on that lighting to actually see.So if you’re looking for fun mood lighting, or some bright colors, I think these will work just fine. If you are looking for something to use under cabinets or in a closet to actually be your main illumination, I don’t feel these have enough brightness for that.

Good product but limited installation possibilities

I really like the Kasa product family. The iPhone app is easy to use and you have many options and features for grouping various products. This is a quality product, but slightly more expensive than competitors. The two places where this specific product falls down is that 1) you cannot get true white light, and 2) it is limited to the length you buy, or shorter if you trim the light strip. You CANNOT extend the line. Kasa does not have the hardware for it and they do not support if you attempt to extend it yourself. I did not try it after chatting with one of their customer support reps. I will say that their customer service IS really good.I ended up using two of these for one room and with the app I was able to gang them together for control (power, brightness, color, and effects). That way I don’t have to change settings for two separate parts. The power supply is a small brick and the controller is fairly small and connects to your wifi network in order to use the app. The set up is pretty straight forward: plug in the controller and light strip, connect to the controller’s wifi network with your phone, and using the Kasa app, choose your wifi network (you may need to enter your password), and it does the rest. The controller will most likely need a firmware update after you get it hooked up to your network. This took about 5-10 minutes total.I HIGHLY recommend getting some kind of mounting channel with diffusion (see photos). While installing the self-adhesive light strip, the coating on top of the strip is quite sticky so routing it through a corner piece took a little finessing.

These LEDs really stand out in quality and features. The price is higher than other LEDs and I can see why

Great LED strip, but not convinced on value

This led strip is interesting and better than others I have tried for the following reasons1) Kasa control app and all the features it brings.2) White is true white because of dedicated white leds in addition to the RGB elements. White on other strips is more like ‘simulated white’ and looks crappy.3) Bright AF. The dedicated white leds make the strip way brighter as they are on to varying amounts for all but the very edges of the color wheel.Bummers1) You cannot create you own effects nor can you configure segments individually as the marketing info says. You get 10 “predefined effects” only, of which maybe 3 are interesting or useful to me. Other strips can’t do this either, but they also don’t claim to be able to. Expectation fails cost stars.2) There are not as many intensity levels as other strips, making transitions more stroboscopic and less fluid.3) **EDIT** this one is now solved. You can buy the extensions. The strip extensions are not available despite the public release info (including a part number, even). I want to put these under upper cabinets… that are 12 feet long. Can only get 6 feet lit up currently. Where are the extensions?4) The price is bonkers. Congrats to TPLink for my kasa addiction, where rational choices are just a distraction.5/15/2020 UpdateUpgraded from 3 stars to 4I have 2 sets of these now. One has a single extension, the other 2 extensions. They have both been on continuously now for 6-7 months. No issues. There have been a few updates to the app that are meaningful, improving customization and ease of use. Was hoping for a bit more, such as the still advertised segment-by-segment configuration.12/13/2020 UpdateSegment by segment color customizations have been released in the app. Not incredibly useful, but you can use this to edit the canned scenes that come in the app with some interesting, although the results are a bit unpredictable. These have now been continuously running for over a year. Seeing some intensity inconsistency now between RGB elements. Animated effects rarely show this, but with static colors it is perceptible.5/8/2021 updateApp iteration has slowed/stopped. No new features since my last update as far as I can tell. The strips have been on 24 hours a day for a year and a half. Usually around 70-80% brightness, sometimes more, sometimes less. And maybe a few months total of only using the white LEDs. And the blue is getting very inconsistent, with different LEDs on the strip having different brightness. Red and green are consistent in brightness. So any color that includes blue is starting to look like crap. See attached photos. I suspect this is going to get increasingly worse. The description for this product states ~23 year lifespan @ 3 hrs a day. I am using them 8x more so should get 1/8 the lifespan. That would be about 3 years. It’s been half that at this point and I am starting to get dissatisfied. Minus 1 star.10/21/2021 updateThe app previously showed energy usage. This is no longer true. I am not sure when it went away. The blue LEDs are getting even weaker and more inconsistent now, making solid colors that include a blue component look like crap. Still leaving 2 different strips on 24/7. One with 2 extensions, one with 1 extension. I think these strips are amazing and I want to love them. But the cost is really high and the longevity is low. I have 2 LED strips, 2 bulbs, 2 power strips, 8 energy monitoring plugs, 2 built-in plugs, 2 outdoor plugs, and 9 switches (27 things!) from TP-Link/Kasa. These strips are my fave. Why won’t they last years and years :(10/24/2022 updateI bought another base unit and 4 extensions when they were priced lower for a period. I run these at 75% brightness for about 16 hours a day and 25% brightness for 8 on a schedule. So far, no dimming of any colors. I feel that TP-Link overdrives these at 100%, leading to early LED degradation. Simple answer to make them last much longer is don’t run them at 100%. Probably even 90% would make a huge improvement. The difference between 75% and 100% isn’t that much anyways. Bumping back up to 4 stars because I just love these things, despite my complaints.

Solid light strips if you can afford it

I’ve been wanting to replace my 25 Magic Home/Nexlux LED controllers. It looks as though Magic Home will never be mainstream enough to get more than the few integrations it has today. It’s ashame because the price for LED footage was much better. I wanted something a little more feature rich, maybe addressable LEDs, but MOST importantly, I needed something to integrate with Samsung Smartthings and WebCore SO I could have all my lighting automations in one place, an easy place to configure. The Samsung/TP-LINK integration for their other devices has been rock solid for my other 100+ TP-LINK devices. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell from the reviews/QAs/purchase page if the KL430’s were written into the Samsung device handler because nowhere in the app does it specifically state this device is supported. I’m here to tell you, that it works and works well (although missing some features). Additionally, this is the same TP-LINK device handler for different hub integrations so I’m confident it will work well for other brands. The ONLY reason I bought them is because they had dropped to $59.Pros (for me):EXTREMELY bright. I know for a fact hue strips are nowhere near this bright and neither were my Nexlux lights. I’m still tweaking the lighting cycles but I normally have to keep the dimmer between 25-50% on the white channel.Good coloring. Comparable to their other bulbs. I think they’re about middle of the road on that.Easy to setup. Not really an issue for me but to some people that might be important.Quality LEDs. They don’t change color just by pressing on them. The connectors are extremely robustThe adhesion is good (and I’ve seen some bad LED adhesion in other brands). There is a little more functionality in the TP-LINK app for this device compared to other lights. I haven’t gone through all the settings but I thought there was a couple cool effects and I saw you could edit them.I can run all the lights through Webcore for the rules and automations.Works with Smartthings. Less of a delay/latency because there’s a direct integration.Generally speaking, really great LEDs.Cons (for me):The PRICE. Over and over again, there’s a chorus of users saying these are still pricey for the length. It will cost me well over $1,000 to replace everything I already have because it’s so much per foot.No jumper connectors (to create a break between cabinets).Their connectors are proprietary so you can’t just make connectors like you could with others. No 90 degree connector. This is a big one. The only way to get around this is to loop/fold but because of the clear waterproof layer it won’t lay flat no matter what you do. The “gel” will break if you fold it. The lights still appear to work but the gel is broken in some of my corners. No circadian control on these, yet. Its been requested as a feature request but not being able match the temp with my other TP-LINK lights without me intervening is annoying.Once you cut, the rest is trash. I’d encourage you to “strategically” purchase/install them the best you can to minimize waste. Do your longest runs first. Conclusion:They are a quality LED/App/Integration but the price absolutely needs to come down to make this more mainstream OR throw another LED strip in the box. This product suits my needs and sufficiently fulfills the requirements I had defined in my search for a better LED integration.

Old system is better but was expensive

I am sad to see the old system replaced. It was a true rgbwic system but was really expensive. The new one is only rgb, no w. I mainly use the white so it’s nice. Pretty easy to install and the adhesive is super strong. Never had one sag or fall. Smart controls wo try k pretty good with the app and connectivity is almost always reliable so you don’t have to re-initialize or re-connect the wifi if power goes out. Biggest problem was that the connectors are proprietary so you can’t really splice or turn corners with this set, just cut to length.

    Don’t count on their tape

This is only the second set, second brand of LED light strips I’ve played with so far but I like them. They have more led’s per inch than one of their competitors. Just don’t count on their double sided tape. The protective strip wants to come off the tape as you’re unrolling the led strip. Do yourself a favor and buy some clips (search led strip clips). There are different style clips depending on your led strip and where you are mounting it. Kasa also says you can only cut short – you can cut and splice if you need to do things like turn a corner. You cannot cut and splice in additional length. I cut and put in one of the pieces to make it easier to turn a corner (lining the underside of a banister railing). As far as the app – I like it better than one of their competitors apps that starts with a G. I like it better because I can take a preset and edit it. I don’t have to start from scratch. Their competitor gives you lots of presets and lots of editing option but no option to edit presets. They also each handle motion slightly differently and Kasa works better for what I want to do.

Cool and feature packed, however you definitely pay a premium.

First off I bought both the main and the extension strip. I’m not 100% sure which I’m reviewing however the only difference is you need the main strip with the controller to actually use the extension. Otherwise it’s just plug and play with the extension and it works just like the main. That said, I’ll be honest, I really do love these lights especially compared against something like the Govee Dreamcolor. The voice controls are a bit better, though I’m still struggling to make Google Home turn the lights OFF (Alexa worked fine btw), and the app has some nice features. This is doubly true in how I’m using them, which is more of a primary lightning scenario vs just an accent/”ooohhh pretty light” area. For example light painting and being able to turn on just a few segments? Awesome, especially if you’re using these to add lights to a room being able to just turn on a few over something and set that to a preset with brightness? Which can then be mapped to a scene for easy voice control and swapping? Or making a scene where presets play off each other like flickering lights with lightning bolts coming in from another area of the room? Yep? That is very nice. That isn’t to say it’s perfect though. For example it seems like you’re limited to 5 presets? This seems just odd to me. Now I can understand somewhat if they are stored on the light strip itself, however at the same time it seems like it would not add much cost (especially with the overall prices and density of storage now) to just up the on board storage to have a lot more presets.Additionally, although there are a nice number of preset effects, I wish you could control the speed of the effect without creating a custom copy of it. Most of them I find to be a bit too fast for my liking, and also the brightness on some is just way too much for my space. It is nice that you can customize the colors on any of the effects, however it would be nice to be able to do something like easily control the direction, pick “off” as a color, etc to really customize it more to your liking. Also on the subject of colors, a nice neutral white is basically impossible to pick using the color wheel in the painting mode. So if, like me, you just wanted a few white lights on to act as like a night light or reading light…. well you can definitely get something workable however it’d be nicer to be able to select the white directly like on the “white” menu. Finally, and the biggest thing here in my opinion, cost. I’m sorry however even given how I raved about certain things above, $50 (as of this review) for 6.6ft and $35!?! for the 3.3ft extensions? This is just way too much. If I wanted to max the length out at about 33 feet I’d need 8 extensions. That is $280 PLUS the initial $50? Or I can sacrifice a few features that may or may not be important and get 2x 16.5 feet strips on the same controller from competitors for around $50?Don’t get me wrong, it’s a quality product that does what it says on the tin. It’s bright, seemingly good quality, has good white reproduction, etc. While I was praising certain features of the app, at the same time it is very much a trade off type thing at the same time too. If money was no object I’d probably choose the Kasa tbh. Apps can change over time to have extra features added in that can bring them closer to each other, however the hardware with the dedicated white LED to help that and brightness and smaller segments for finer control can’t be changed as easily. Which is possibly where Kasa has a leg up.Sadly money IS something we have to consider and right now I don’t know if the premium is worth it or not.

A caution for all GOOGLE HOME users!

The Kasa KL430 v1.0 sold by Amazon is incompatible with Google Home controls via the app and voice assistant. My family purchased three separate TP-Link Kasa KL430 smart light strips at Amazon over the 2020 holidays. While all of the TP-Link Kasa smart light strips purchased from Amazon were the same model number (KL430), two of the boxes in our first order were the larger KL430 v2.0 and one box purchased a few days later in a second order was the smaller KL430 v1.0 box.I have installed all three light strips in our home and found that while all three KL430 light strips appear in the Google Home app, only the two KL430 v2.0 smart light strips work perfectly with Google Home. The v1.0 smart light strip will only respond to commands initiated from the Kasa app but will not respond to any Google Home commands. I have confirmed that there is an incompatibility between the v1.0 smart light strip and the Google Home control because I cannot control the KL430 v1.0 from either the Google Home app or the Google Assistant voice devices.I say “confirmed” because I completed 2+ hours of troubleshooting by performing:- A hard reset all KL430 light strips to factory settings and removed them from both the Kasa and Google Home apps- Setting up all KL430 light strips in the latest version of the Kasa app for iOS (v2.238.1 | build 867) on an iPhone XR with Bluetooth enabled and with all three KL430 light strips connected to the same WiFi network/subnet- Confirming that all KL430 light strips have the latest firmware installed (firmware v1.0.10 for the KL430 v1.0 light strip and firmware 1.0.7 for the KL430 v2.0 light strips)- Synchronizing the Location and Time setting the in Kasa app with my local time zone- Linking my TP-Link account to the uninstalled/reinstalled Google Home iOS app (v2.32.111)After all of that, both of the KL430 v2.0 light strips work perfectly with the Google Home app and Google Assistant voice control devices. However, the KL430 v1.0 light strip DOES NOT respond to any Google Home app or Google Assistant voice commands. My hope is that there is a secret handshake or similar software fix from TP-Link that I can apply to the v1.0 hardware, but it’s more likely that I will have to box it back up and return to Amazon. I have a support request into TP-Link but who knows when (or if) that will ever be answered? For all I know, users with Amazon Echo devices for home control have no problems with the Kasa KL430 v1.0 hardware. But my warning to all Google Home users is to check the bottom of the box from Amazon *before* installing and return/request the v2.0 instead. And since there’s no way to know if Amazon is going to send you the v1.0 or v2.0 hardware, ordering will be a crap shoot. Good luck, everyone…

    Nice and Bright.

Much brighter than the competition. But more expensive too. If you want your light strip to be warm, white and bright you won’t find any thing that’s brighter, warmer AND cheaper. Most of the less expensive competition doesn’t even have dedicated white leds. The only inexpensive alternative worth thinking about is the Govee Dreamchaser Wifi and its not bright enough for anything but ambience and decor. If you need to light a room, not just for pretty effect but so you can actually see or read a page, this is your best option. Then if you’d also like some pretty pastel accents and effects KASA gives you some of that too. And the colors it produces are smooth soothing pastels. Unlike those budget strips that can be harsh and artificial neon looking. But if your mainly interested in those effects, get the Dreamchaser Wifi instead. You’ll save a bunch of money. And the Govee has a built in microphone so your lights can respond to sounds and music in the room. In fact you might want to consider using both. Kasa for lighting and ambience, Dreamchaser for accent decorations.UPDATE: A friend of mine came over and immediately wanted them for his home too. I came back here to read the reviews to see if any new issues had arisen or if there were any improvements to the software. No on both counts, but I have to shake my head at some of the old reviews here complaining about not being able to save custom presets. Maybe that was true in 2019, but today you can definitely create custom presets and save them. I also have to laugh at the people saying these are too expensive when these are actually the LESS costly alternative to Philips Hue. Anyone who posts a review complaining about the price should let us all know what they consider to be a cheaper and better alternative. Because as far as I know there isn’t any! Yes there are cheaper light strips out there but they are inferior in every way and most of all in the quality of the light they emit. So if you find a cheaper and superior alternative let us all know what it is, otherwise just keep your price gripes to yourself. Similarly, quit complaining about having to toss the trimmings if you cut them. Do you know a better strip that lets you use the trimmings? Let us know what it is please. If you do your research I think you’ll find this is still the best mid-priced strip. Look at what the Philips Hue costs and then you’ll come running back here!

Do your homework; figure out how many lumens you need before you buy.

Amazon shipped 5 TP-Link Kasa KL430 kits to me in just a couple of days. One box was marked “Amazon Warehouse”, and it contained only a foot of broken LED strip. They swapped it out immediately, with a sincere apology. That part was great. The KL430 strips synced fairly easily, a TON easier than the TP-Link “Tapo” strips I tried first. Tapo also required yet another app.I wound up sticking with the Kasa KL430’s and adding a sixth strip since my sunroom took three complete strips down each side. With 6 total strips at 1400 lumens each, you’d think the room would be much brighter. Make sure you connect total strips behind button before plugging into power. Any added strips will require the button’s hard reset (10secs).These six KL430 kits replaced a set of “SuperBrightLEDs” brand strips (model NFLS-VCTH1200) which was giving me issues due to a loose connection or bad power. Just thought I’d move over to Kasa strips, since their kits use my existing Kasa app and the kits are just “easy” to put up… Finished prices were about the same. The result was seriously under-whelming. The KL430’s went in fine, synced fine, and pretty much do what my app and their advertising says. BUT…They’re no where near as bright as my old set. Gotta give the comparison info though, the KL430 claims to provide 1400ish lumens per 16.5′ strip. I have three strips on each side for a total of 8,400 [advertised] lumens. My old SuperBrightLEDs advertised “511 Lumens/ft”, which is around 48,000 lumens. Which obviously is apples and oranges. My advice: Add up the lumens and do your homework. If you have a medium-large room and need good light, Look somewhere else. If you’re looking for an easy, but solid install for middle-of-the-road LED strip lighting while getting a bullet proof app, this is your kit. In my opinion, for this price point we should be getting a much brighter install.Jpg was taken after dark, six KL430 strips running at 100% and 7050 Kelvin. For comparison, two 60w incandescent bulbs would do about as good though they’d provide.a more yellow light.

Good and getting better. Good support.

I bought these lights because of a you tube review. However, I could not initially connect them to my Wi-Fi. I am tech savvy, and I have installed many smart home devices. I tried this with 2 different phones and it became pretty clear there was an issue with the lights. Problem seemed firmware related. I spoke to they tech support and got the typical support you expect from anyone. Is it plugged in? I was a little frustrated at this point and knew I could just return it to Amazon no questions asked and got a replacement or some other product. After that support call my case was elevated to an Engineer. They said they would get back to me in 24 hours. My call started 8:18 PM and all be darned if they didn’t get back with me at 8:13 PM the next day. Kudos to the 24 hour mark being met. What was impressive was they wrote me a beta apk to download. It worked as intended and allowed me to update the firmware, which no doubt was the root cause. I was then able to update to the latest software. So be warned you could run into some initial hiccups.

    It’s a Party Light Strip

I’ve gone almost crazy with the TP-Link KASA Smart devices, as they are very easy to configure into a home network via WiFi, and control with an app on a phone. KASA did a very good job at covering most of the user desires for lighting automation and control. The KL420L5 is an addressable RGB LED strip of 5 meters, or 16 feet long, with every group of 3 LED’s capable of being not only a different color (colour for our UK friends), but a different brightness. The app is captivating as are the lights. The only caveat is that the app is limited in the number of special effects as opposed to an ESP8266 running WLED (thanks to Air Cookie on GitHub for that!) but there are good mesmerizing presets in the app for someone that wants a ready-to-run, out of the box experience. If you want a 16′ party strip light, this is a fun thing. Now, if you want to have an outdoor Christmas light competition in your neighborhood, then you will have to level-up to either the aforementioned WLED controller, or go BIG with a serious Xlights and a PC building the light show with something like Artnet, v1.31, and things like that.As we used to say, “It’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!” Ok, that’s an experience I’ve never had, so I have to take that at face value! 😉

Pleased So Far, Easy Install, Good Connectivity

We’ve had these installed a couple months now. Install was straightforward; the hardest part was deciding where to place these under the cabinets and where to drill the holes in the cabinets so that I could have one continuous run. Once installed, these were easy to set-up, including connecting to our wifi. The color and the brightness variety one can choose is endless. We’ve settled on a medium blue/white. Animation is available, but we did not consider as we thought that would be distracting. They are set-up to go on at sunset and to turn off at bedtime. I will be curious to see their lifetime – I am hoping that they last a long time, but time will tell.UPDATE #1: After two months, I am still very pleased. We have these installed under the cabinet and have a medium blueish color come on every night. Looks great. Works great. We don’t use the animations, but we have changed the color a few times. We are enjoying. All lights continue to work as expected.

True review and what to expect

I usually don’t leave reviews but there was so much inaccurate information about these that I decided I would for them in hopes that it helps someone make their decision. I read a lot of reviews and went through the questions/answers on these and it made me skeptical. But, I have other TP Link/Kasa products and they have always worked well so I decided to give these a shot. As you can tell in the picture I wanted to install these in my built-ins…and did so. One of the answers to a question I read said that you couldn’t bend these 90 degrees to install them…completely false. I have them bent to 90 degrees and they work fine, hell they are even twisted and bent at the 90. I saw other reviews that complained about not being a true white…it will do something I would say is equivalent to 6000k temperature which is white enough for me. All in all these are amazing and I would definitely recommend them if you are looking for an easy to install and setup LED strip lighting solution.

Needs a better white light option.

I have lots of Kasa products, so I looked here first for an LED light strip option. I got these for a backlight for a TV. What I was really needing was a light strip that could produce the white lights from 2500K to 3000K as well as color. The light strip can do a bright white light and pseudo warm light if you move into the yellow/orange range. But it’s nothing like what their smart bulbs are capable of. My guess is, it’s because they don’t have dedicated white LEDs. This is an area they can improve on by having both types on the same strip. Or, if that can’t be done, at least offer a model dedicated to white light. Other than that, the color LEDs are great.

    Great for looks!

I was all ready to use a staple gun to make sure it would stick to my wall, but after brushing across the area with a cleaner and a bit of alcohol, I tried the adhesive that’s on the strip. It’s super sticky! I took a gamble and didn’t anchor anything other than using the adhesive and it still looks great. I appreciate using the Kasa app to program it, though I found a few tiny glitches (which could just be me being an idiot, in fairness). And I can get Siri to control it via shortcuts. Super awesome!

A little fun in the kitchen

Wanted to put some lighting under my cabinets to make my tiny kitchen look cozy when not it use. These were easy to stick up and have lasted well. The only thing I’m not fond of is how big the plug is and of course, it’s one set of lights per area, no matter how small you cut them to fit. But overall, I like them! Of course, there’s so many colors to choose from, that can be fun to play with.

Good all in one led setup.

Got another set on sale after trying one awhile back. Installed on a bedroom headboard to backlight frosted glass accent panels. Perfect size for this application. They look amazing. I like this setup because it’s plug and play with the rest of my smarthome gadgets. Includes power supply and Kasa interface so there is nothing else required. The one thing I do not like about these lights is the custom modes can not be customized. Some modes are nice but some are just obnoxious. I want to program my own light modes but you can’t do it with these. Another issue is Kasa developers are constantly messing with the app and breaking it. It used to work perfectly but now I never know if my lights are going to respond to commands since they randomly quit working. Subtracted a star because of this.

    Sooo easy to set up!

Kasa products are so very easy to link to app and also to Alexa. I love these lights, installed under cabinets. I changed color to blue and dimmed to 40 percent. Put them on a timer in the app, and they work like a charm

Not as good as the original.

I have the first Gen of these lights. I was hoping that with a new model there would be improvements, but these don’t have all the features the old ones do. And they aren’t nearly as bright. Guess it’s time to try another brand so I can see if I can find something comparable to the old ones.

Good lights overall, was sent used lights

While the lights work as advertised, I was a little disappointed to see that while I purchased them new, they were very clearly already used. The adhesive cover was gone and there was hair and dust throughout the strip. The adhesive was practically gone because of this. Be careful when purchasing new from this seller.

Fun Lighting w/ Some Quality Control Issues

Beautiful accent lights. They have many effects (with a handful being useful), and the zone coloring is a true game-changer.Very bright and easily visible even during the day!Unfortunately, the adhesive used is fairly weak. Since installation, every evening I’ve had to go around the area and press the sagging lights back up into (temporary) place—until I purchased some clear double-sided tape. That stuff mostly solved the problem.Bigger Issue:The final ~3.5 feet of lights had given me connectivity issues since day 1. It was out of sync with the rest of the lights (usually stuck in all red) until I wiggled it around.Today, as I attempted to reseat this problematic area, the end ~3.5’ completely separated in my hands (like a severed lizard tail).I suppose I’ll reach out to customer support to see what (if anything) can be done.

    Great Features

I have purchased two of these light strips. For the first one, I am a trained classical organist. The instrument I have at home for practice was designed without lighting for the pedalboard. I tried battery operated LED lights and got tired of burning through 8 AA batteries every few days and wanted a more permanent solution.Setup of the strip was a breeze. It comes with self-stick adhesive on one side and I was able to quickly attach it to the underside of the keyboard assembly on the organ. Using the Kasa app on my phone, it quickly found the local network, performed an online update of firmware, and I was up and running in less than 10 minutes. In addition to being able to adjust the brightness and millions of colors, the app also has a number of different effects features such as candlelight, haunted house, rain, Christmas, etc.The LED lights are plenty bright and the colors are well saturated. My ONLY complaint is that I have added it to my Google Home Assistant control so that I am able to use voice commands to turn on and off. HOWEVER, I have found that after a couple of days, for some reason, Google Assistant is unable to turn the strip on or off by voice. When using the Google Home app, it appears as if the strip is turning off and on, but nothing happens.I contacted tech support and they made suggestions such as: resetting and repeating the setup, removing from the home group, removing from the room, etc. I tried everything and it doesn’t work which is frustrating because when I want to turn the lights on, I have to use my phone and the Kasa app.I will continue to work with tech support for a solution, and if I get one, I will certainly update my review.Otherwise, the light strip is a great value and has lots of features. One more note: I cannot speak for integration with Alexa as I do not have that system in my smart home – I only use Google Home exclusively.

    Just Wow

We used these outdoors for Christmas. I know that is not the recommended location. It took a little work to sync all sets so that they lit up the house the same way. They integrated with Alex flawlessly. We have Kasa brand throughout the house and highly recommend their products. We left the light strips in place at the end of the holiday and just took down the controller and power plug. Looking forward to not having to hang new lights next season.

Great device, just don’t turn off and on too much (I think)

So, overall these are amazing products. The stickiness of the adhesion side is surprisingly strong. They get BRIGHT. They’re fun, and can also set a range of moods. I had one in my bathroom and it outshined the 5 LED lights over the sink! I had it wrapped around that whole fixture and set to about 5000K white light, it brought everything into relief. I kinda figured the gf would like to set it to candlelight mode during baths but she has no patience for smart technology. So, why is a star missing? Well, I haven’t figured it out, and that’s actually rare for me, but it just kept disconnecting from the wifi. It wasn’t far from the router, so I’m suspecting it’s because it was plugged into one of those sockets that’s controlled by the light switch. So I suppose turning it on and off too much confuses it. It got so common, I bought another one and set both strands up under the kitchen cabinets… where I never turn them off.Which is nice, I love the excellent lighting. Oddly, I think my cat, Cami, who owns the kitchen, enjoys the candlelight mode. Speaking of modes (patterns), it’s true you can’t build a pattern from scratch. But really, you just hit a pre-made one, edit it, you can switch it’s colors and speed, and when you save it it saves as its own pattern. I don’t use the stock candle, I turned the speed up and made one of the colors more yellow, so it mimics flickering better. Turned speed up on lightning, cause unfortunately I live where storms are apparently afraid to step foot into so I need to try to mimic storms in my kitchen… Haven’t edited any others, they look great.

You Get What You Pay For

These 5050 LED lights are about the same quality as any other you’ll find on Amazon that use the generic remote with the color/program buttons. The premium you’re paying for is the integration with the Kasa ecosystem and larger Google/Alexa interoperability. As far as color accuracy goes, it’s not great—again—same quality as SUPERNIGHT and other brands using RBGIC diodes. When I want to set my other Kasa lights and this light strip to the same color, the results are usually harrowing; requiring a separate adjustment after. TP Link should very seriously consider using RGBWW and IC if they want a solid Hue light strip competitor. Maybe use a white silicone protective covering as well to diffuse the light without buying third party diffusers.

    BEWARE: Cannot splice and reattach!!!!

*** UPDATE 2/21/2022 ***I will not change the rating for tp-link, but a shout out to Amazon who replaced this product for me. Thank you Amazon. So I do like the product, but the warning I give below along with poor tp-link service overrides good experience with Amazon.*********While I am sure the product is good, I just WASTED 43$ and had a VERY bad experience dealing with TP-Link manager trying to get my money back because I cut the tape with the hopes to splice it to gether to go around some corners and make a T intersection. Very STANDARD practice for LED lighting strips. There is NOTHING on the Amazon site about this product that says you can’t do this. It says you can cut it to make it smaller, but does not say you can reattach. I even bought a 4-pin connector set on Amazon to do this. What a bummer. Once I cut it, I was screwed. The manager kept saying that this was clearly stated on the box and their PDF file on their website. Well…, I didn’t have the box until it came, right? And who goes to other websites and downloads PDF files? The Manager, Denrich or Deidric(?), claimed that they can’t control the content of what Amazon says about their product. What? Total BS. In the end, he was totally unwilling to work with me.Basically said we can’t do anything and sianara!!Totally upset. Bad business and I will never buy a Tp-Link product again. And Amazon needs to SPELL this out CLEARLY. You cannot splice this LED strip!

The reason they are expensive: THEY’RE THAT GOOD

Like most here I twitched a little at the price tag for just a mere 6.2 feet of lights. But I am becoming a Kasahead and have not been disappointed with any of their other stuff so far so I decided to finally replace the under-cabinet lights in my kitchen after having the cheap LED strips under there for a decade. The difference could not be greater. The cheap LED lights are cheap for a reason, and most of the reason is the absolute trash-quality of the lighting they produce. Everything has an off-putting hue to it and almost makes everything look neon even if you tweak it to the most neutral setting you can muster. The connectors are trash, the remotes are trash, they’re just cheap junk. Enter the Kasa strips… I implore you to think of an angelic fanfare of trumpets here. These produce a light so much better than the cheapies. Clean, clear light that makes things look normal, unless you choose the effects and colors of which there are many. But I will probably keep these on a low and neutral setting most of the time and it’s a night-and-day difference from the old cheap lights. The only real downside, and this is something that all led strip lights have, is that they don’t make turns easily. You can force a wide turn but you’ll still have a few warps in the strip. The day somebody figures out right angles on these will be a glorious day indeed. I don’t fault Kasa for this, though, because it’s a problem bigger than one company.Overall I cannot recommend these more.

Great for lighting a step between rooms

I have some Kasa smart plugs and really like them and the Smartphone app. This light strip solves a problem we’ve had for years with our living room. There’s a 7″ step down into our living room and not everyone expects or notices it. We’re had a few stumbles and flying food incidents. We put the light strip adhered under the lip of the step and can now light it to clearly delineate the step. With the app we can make the light strip as bright or dim as we want, and adjust the color of light as well. There are even optional lighting effects if you want to enliven a party.

It’s everything I want in a light strip!

Perfect for multiple applications. Lit up under the cabinets in the kitchen as well as some figurines in a shelf. I bought some diffusers to evenly spread out the lights and help with straight installation. I’d recommend doing that! All around great and can customize to your heart’s content! I did have trouble syncing one of the light strips to the app but I contacted support and they suggested using a different phone and it worked instantly. I have an Android phone and three of four of the strips synced right away. I used my mom’s iPhone to sync the last one.

Does not work in groups properly

First off – Love Kasa / TP Link. This strip light is fun to play around with if you’re using one single strand. But in order to get enough brightness, I have to install multiple strands. Once you set them up in a group the effects stop working properly. The easiest example to point out is the “Lightning” effect. On a single strand the lights are off and then they randomly flicker bright white/purple to simulate lightning. If you setup two strands in the Kasa app and turn on the same effect, the lights that are SUPPOSED to be off are now bright white and the effect is completely ruined. It’s an obvious bug that Kasa customer service refuses to acknowledge so I’m sending all 4 strands back.

I have a few Kasa products and I am never disappointed in them. This one however is by far my favorite. App is easy and fun to use, comes with predefined effects (rainbow, thunder, grandmas Christmas lights) and let’s you create your own effect and light painting. If you’re like me and just wanted some warm color desks lights it does that too. You can also dim them which is nice. 100% will buy again.

    dissapointed

at $39.00 for 6 ft, this is a disappointment. yes it is sticky no problem. Is it bright? YES, are the colors good, YES. IS it hard to set up? YES. I have tried 2 sessions with the TPLINK support chat people and it still loses connection. I have a great signal strength where it is located so that is not the problem. I also made a mistake in buying the 6ft model and when I went to buy extensions, $25.00 for 3 ft. ridiculous. I am going to try and return it and if I can’t I will sell it. At this point it doesn’t work. I got it to finally hook up with my internet, but it dropped the connection a few minutes later and it keeps losing connection for no reason.

    Works great with Home Assistant

This light strip works great with Home Assistant, all options and light effects that are available on the Kasa app are supported on the Home Assistant TP-Link Kasa integration. And the best part about it is the low-latency as it communicates via LAN, and doesn’t need to connect to your TP-Link account over the internet to link to Home Assistant.

If you’re considering using Lumia stream with these lights, read this!

I purchased these while on sale during Prime Day this year so I could upgrade my streaming room and give chat something fun to mess around with during my streams. Word of caution, while these lights work amazingly well with the app, and integrating them with Alexa was a breeze, using them with Lumia stream will probably leave you disappointed.Lumia doesn’t allow you to use any of the dynamic lighting affects that the Kasa app will, so no two different colors on the same strip or flowing between all the colors of the rainbow, and they’ll leave the light strip set to whatever color the program last broadcasted to it. It’s something you can work around, yes, but the biggest setback by far is that Lumia can’t turn the lights on and off. And in contacting their support, they’ll tell you that you need to send a message to TP-Link to get Lumia rights to do so.Best thing I can recommend if you’re considering integrating these lights to your stream is plan to have them be a background mood light that you don’t mind being solid. That’s what I’ve ended up doing with these, and I’ve done some IFTTT command writing to let me quickly swap between the Kasa presets I create within the app, but I know not everyone will want to get that nitty-gritty. That said though, these lights are bright and can easily shift a room’s mood – even when I’m not streaming, they make for great mood lighting while working from home, or when I’m hanging with the girlfriend playing Stardew.I highly recommend the lights themselves, but just be mindful that there will be some work on your end if you’d like to use these with Lumia Stream.

Great light strip. Not so great warranty

The media could not be loaded.

These light strips are really well made hardware-wise. They were also less expensive and more fully featured than a similar strip I got from Philips. However, the extension suddenly stopped working only a couple of months after I bought it. It started color cycling instead of showing the selected color (see video). TP-Link was ready to replace under warranty until they found out that I had cut the extension to fit the purpose I needed, at which point they said it was no longer covered under warranty! All the advertising material promotes the ability to cut these to length and doesn’t say you’ll void your warranty when you do so. Especially since the failed strip has nothing to do with cutting it (it was working fine for months after I had cut it), this seems a bit unfair to me.

Brighter and better than cheaper brand

I have a couple Kasa color changing bulbs, and 2 other Govee light strips that are two years old. I bought a new Govee at the same time to compare with this. I was quite surprised by how much brighter this strip is compared to all the Govee ones. The density of LEDs may be responsible as they are spaced every 3/4″ which is about twice frequently. There are perhaps a bit fewer customization options with Kasa, but the rainbow, flicker, raindrops, and ocean effects are better than any of the Govee presets and motion/fading is smoother. The Kasa presets also allow you to customize colors starting from the presets which is a cool feature. Worth the extra money over the bargain brand.Update: After owning this a while, I will warn you that creating color combinations that don’t involve cycling through pink takes a lot of effort. The Kasa color wheel, for some reason, has a giant swath of pink that you nearly always have to go through. For example, if you want to set a fafe from purple to blue to orange, it cannot be done without “mandatory” cycling thru pink. Some folks might appreciate that, but it’s my least favorite aspect of this.

    Great for certain applications

I bought two strips of these for my kitchen cabinets. Easy to mount and I am already deep in the Kasa app use so setup and install was easy. But the colors produced did not do good things to food. Carrots turned out blood red, for instance. So for a living room, or kid’s room they would be great. Kitchen, notsomuch. Regardless of color setting they just wouldn’t look right for me.

Not ideal for a quiet room

I have this set up as a backlight to a desk in my bedroom and the amount of light produced is great, everything to do with the light strips themselves has been perfect so far. For context I primarily use the white settings, but I’m sure the various richly produced colors also seem to work as expected and the many customizable scenes could provide you hours of entertainment if you are lucky enough not to be prone to headaches or eyestrain. As for my real issue; The off-brand power adapter that came with the power strip makes a high pitched oscillating sound whenever the lights are *not* using power. This means that when I go to sleep (And want to leave the lights plugged in for the sake of their scheduling to function in the morning), watch a movie/game in the dark, etc. that I must ignore a small repeated whine as though a teapot is perpetually about to whistle reflecting off of the walls throughout the room. And of course when the adapter was atop my desk rather than hidden on the floor behind this was even more noticeable.I have tried other outlets to no avail and a new adapter would put me out another ~$15 or so, so for now I will continue putting off that purchase. Returning the lights is more effort than I’m willing to go through and it would be worse to live without this light-strip, but I would not purchase further lights without some assurance of quality.

    Limited control with Alexa

I got these because the last string of lights I bought just refused to work with Alexa even though they claimed to. So I spent a little more and went with these Kasa lights hoping they would be better. They were easy to connect to Alexa, however, you can’t control any of the effects with Alexa, only color and on/off. It would be nice to have more effects, or at least better ones, some of the presets in the Kasa app are pretty boring. Overall, I’m not going to bother trying to return and find something else, at least it seems to retain the effects settings from the Kasa app when it is turned off and on again by Alexa so I’ll make it work. Could definitely be better. Sound mode would be nice. My other lights have a “breathe” effect that is cool too that these don’t seem to have. At least being able to access your presets from the Kasa app would be a step in the right direction.

The software and lighting features are pretty good. I wish there was a way to make custom animations or at least turn off part of the strip while using an animated preset. My main complaint is that the adhesive wasn’t strong enough to hold up the cable connecting to the controller.
