Best Laser toy EVER ::: sort of :::

I enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn. It’s quiet in the house, almost all our critters (two retired racing greyhounds, a boredor and our Siamese) are piled up on my husband’s bed ::: all of them happily sleeping away. (Two other cats sleep in our garage)The only problem is I rarely get to enjoy my quiet time alone. Doesn’t matter that my husband’s room and mine are in different parts of the house, with MANY doors and walls between us ::: because Tanya (our mutant Siamese) has freakishly good hearing. As a result, ANY time I get up during the night, be it to visit the you-know-what, or simply get a glass of water ::: Tanya magically appears upon my back (it’s a Siamese thing) nuzzling my ears. When we adopted Tanya we purchased her a laser toy (affectionately nick-named “click click” for the sound it makes). Tanya was instantly addicted to “click click”. What was fun and cute in the beginning ::: became a royal nuisance ::: as Tanya NEVER wanted to stop playing “click click”. “Meow ::: MEOW ::: MEOOOOOW” OK already, enough. Most mornings ::: should I chose to ignore her pleadings she begins practicing an ancient form of Siamese acupuncture on my right leg. Why my left leg you might ask ::: because that’s the one closest to the mouse in my right hand. Unfortunately way too many of my leggings were serrated in the process ::: and my right leg is covered with dozens of tiny pin pricks. The solution (after 20 minutes spent cursing while swatting Tanya’s razor sharp claws off my right leg): get up and silently pad around the house with “click click” in my hand ::: Tanya happily sauntering behind. I love Tanya ::: I NEED to walk, so why not do both early in the morning?! Because then Pupper, our boredor (half border collie, lab) wakes up and wants to chase after the light ::: pissing off the cat.Once Pupper wakes up, so do the boys Harvey and Raleigh (retired racing greyhounds) ::: neither of which want anything to do with the laser. “Treats! Treats! We want Treats!” Harvey’s way of begging for treats consists of a loud “LOVE YOU” barked at around 200 decibels. Loud enough to wake up all of Anaheim, let alone my poor unsuspecting husband. So I give ALL the dogs a treat and then let them out into the yard to do their morning business ::: at which time Tanya’s back on my back (pun intended) meowing for more “click click” time.Getting the dogs back into the house is chaos ::: happy chaos, but still chaos. The first thing they do is run back into my husband’s bedroom and cover him with sloppy dog kisses. At which point the husband gets up to let them out to do their morning business ::: which he doesn’t know has already transpired. The image of him, looking just like Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future), stumbling to the sliding glass door, is forever etched upon my heart.By then the sun’s coming up and my quiet morning time is basically shot to hell. When I saw the FroliCat BOLT Interactive Laser Pet Toy, I got a glimmer of hope. Something to take Tanya and Pupper’s attention away from me (and my tortured right leg). So I ordered it and waited, hope blossoming in my heart.A few days later my husband brought a box to me. “Is this what you’ve been waiting for?” We quickly opened the box ::: inserted the batteries (not included) and placed the FroliCat on the ground between us. When I pressed the button, it softly whirred to life ::: tiny red light dancing across the living room floor. Tanya sprang after it. For 15 glorious minutes Tanya darted back and fort after the light. SUCCESS! Unfortunately Tanya’s prancing eventually attracted Pupper ::: who quickly decided she wanted in on the game. Pupper is four times Tanya’s size. Smart cat that she is, Tanya quickly exited the room.We have an other cat, a small Bengal named Mookie, who is most definately NOT intimidated by ANY of our dogs. So we reset the button on the FroliCat BOLT Interactive Laser Pet Toy ::: then sat back to watch Mookie and Pupper attack the red dot on the living room floor. When the 15 minutes were up, and the FroliCat turned itself off ::: Mookie and Pupper lay down on the ground waiting for it to start up again. They were sleeping together, next to the the FroliCat, when I left the room. This morning when I got up to type on my computer ::: Tanya was waiting. So I fired up the FroliCat and set out to enjoy my quiet time. Tanya looked at the FroliCat and the light dancing across my office carpet. She walked over to the FroliCat, carefully stuck her paw into the hole ::: then pulled back and slugged it. I picked it up, set it on the ground, and she whacked it again. I swear she was laughing at me. Tanya jumped up onto the table where I’d placed “click click” and meowed. Morning had begun. As I sit typing this, she’s been lovingly applying Siamese acupuncture to my right leg.

    Great concept, imperfect application

I bought this for our 2 cats who are OBSESSED with the red laser dot. Any time I even touch the drawer where the laser is kept, I have cats practically suffocating me to try and get into it. So, to find a less dramatic way of keeping them entertained, I turned to Amazon and found this product. It seemed like a perfect solution: hit the switch, watch them have fun, and 10 minutes or so later it would turn off. There are 2 issues with this:1. Unless you have a high enough perch for it, this laser doesn’t have a very wide range. About 7’ seemed about right for decent coverage. And that perch had better be stable, because this thing falls over quite easily due to the pivoting laser pointer inside. Mine fell more than once until I found a good spot.2. This laser moved fairly quickly, and there is no way to adjust the speed it seems. Our cats loved watching it, but it wasn’t ever in one spot long enough for them to actually chase it. Perhaps our cats are a tad lazy, but it’s something to be aware of.A final comment: The laser itself is bright, and the case seems sturdy. If you feel the above quirks aren’t problematic, I would say this is a good purchase.

    Best Cat Toy Ever

FroliCat Bolt Laser Toy / B0021L8W6KI wasn’t too certain about buying this toy for my cats’ fifth birthday. I knew that they like to chase lasers, so that wasn’t the problem – my concern was that they don’t like to STOP chasing lasers. Our last foray into laser pointer territory ended with me letting the laser dot “escape” through an air vent in the wall, thinking that would end the game – no, they just sat vigil under the air vent for five hours. I didn’t want a repeat of that.On the other hand, they are housecats and seem pretty bored and listless, and they definitely need the exercise, so I broke down and bought this… and could not be happier. The best thing about this laser toy is that if has a mechanical ‘servo’ sound – a kind of light-pitched soft whirring and turning whenever it is in operation. The sound is soft enough to not really bother a human (although you probably wouldn’t want to sit next to it while you watch TV), but it is distinct enough for a cat to hear it in the other room and come running. The practical upshot of this is that your cats figure out really quickly that the magical laser dot ONLY appears when the whirring noise turns on. So if the whirring noise goes off, the laser is gone, and they don’t hunt endlessly for it. Indeed, my most active cat has figured out that the laser dot COMES from the whirring thing and will lead me to its spot on the table and demand that I push the button to activate it. Awesome.I suppose the other best thing about this toy is that it works. It’s silly that has to be a product ‘plus’, but such is the state of the cat toy industry these days, I suppose. But boy, does this thing work! It takes 4 AA batteries, and I recommend they be fully charged (try Eneloop batteries, you won’t be disappointed) in order for the light to be as bright as possible. We have the toy sitting on a coffee table, with the adjustable mirror set to the perfect angle so that the light appears on the carpet a few feet away. The light swirls in slow patterns, jumps in fast leaps, and holds still for a few seconds so that my lazy calico can leap on it and cover it with both paws. The best part is that the cats never seem to get frustrated with not being able to ‘catch’ the light – they seem to recognize that it’s a game, not real prey, and that’s fine with me. My tuxedo always plays, but sometimes my calico just likes to lay on the floor and watch the light. Thy both come running at full speed, though, when they hear that motor start. The toy has a fifteen minute shut-off point so you can turn this on and leave the room without worrying that your cats will make themselves sick chasing a dot for hours. It’s as easy as putting the batteries in (with an easy sliding-door chamber – no tricky maneuvering required), setting it down on a table, and pressing a button to turn on. If you want it to shut off before the 15 minutes are up, you press the button again. So easy! I am seriously considering buying more of these – one for each room in the house.~ Ana Mardoll

Great, but wish the batteries lasted a bit longer.

Works great, but with regular play of 2-3 times a day I find that the batteries run out after a little more than a week. It would be nice if it held some bigger batteries that would last longer. Otherwise it has been fantastic!

Gets stuck too often – no reverrse – motor can’t be turned off – time limitation

What I disliked about this Laser Tail toy for my cats:#1. It gets stuck too often when it hits a wall or ends up under at the bottom ok kitchen countertops. If the toy had a full reverse only when it hits something that prevents it from turning or backing up to get itself unstuck would be very beneficial. My cats love the toy, but they get annoyed when the Laser Tail constantly gets stuck and quits moving around for them to chase the laser light.#2. The motor can’t be turned off when using it as a hand operated laser toy. To make this an amazing cat toy, it needs a switch to shut the motor off when hand-held so that only the laser light is active. It is contoured perfectly for hand-held use, but the motor running when in this mode just helps kill the batteries in the unit. Having an option just to use the laser allow the batteries to last much longer in this kitty toy.#3. It has a time limit of 15 minutes, far too short for my kitties! I had to keep powering the unit on after its time limit of 15 minutes expired. It would be much better if there was a time select option for the end user. 15 minutes is way too short! My cats played with this Laser Tail toy for over 2 hours, having to constantly turn it on every 15 minutes gets old real fast. 8 times in a 2-hour period is too much. I’d prefer to see time interval options starting at a minimum of 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour or a constant ON option just for the MOTORIZED aspect of the toy. The laser should just be ON or OFF.#4. The power switch is on the bottom, so every time the timer runs out you have to literally pick up the toy to start it up again. If this button were on top, when it stops and the cats start investigating why did my prey stop moving, and they hit the button with their paw, it’d start moving again and the chase would be back on.If it weren’t for these 4 things, my rating of 3 stars would have been 5 stars. What I liked about the toy: It’s self-propelled, which kept my cats coming back for more, but when it shut down, they got very upset and started crying their toy wasn’t working {so they thought}, until I turned it on again. But having to pick up the toy to turn it on, too me, somewhat defeats the toys purpose. As my cats look at me like why are you picking up our toy? Are you taking it away? No kitties, I’m not, I have to do this to restart it for you.It was really fun and funny watching my cats play with this toy, but not so fun {for me} having to pick it up to turn it back on every 15 minutes. All in all, I’d still recommend the toy, despite its shortcomings. My cats really love it, and after their 2-hour playtime with it, they were worn out and went off to take themselves a kitty nap. But when they woke up, they started asking for their new toy, the Laser Tail again for more playtime. I just wish the end user had more options in its use.

Even my 13 year old cat likes it.

My old laser unit died after many years of service so I was going to buy it again. That laser is no longer available so I looked around for a replacement. This one has the two most important features, random motion and a turn off timer. I turn it on from time to time and all 3 cats come to play. The 13 year old cat will play a little but mostly watch the other 2 cats chase the lights.

INCREDIBLE FUN FOR CATSSS – But Use it Correctly, In The Right Environment For Better Effects – ITEM EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED!

We Love this thing! The first thing I noticed about it was it’s patterns are pretty predictable BUT only in a linear situation like putting it on a large floor area and letting it go. It seems ideal but really the best way to use this is to put it in a smaller room with a lot of things the laser can bounce off of (ride over). As it moves about the room it ‘rides’ the surface area of whatever is in it’s way (which can lead to some cool light stretching/dot streatching/morphing effects with the light seen best in a dark room), this changes the very dynamic of how it looks in different rooms. You can also get a couple of these (especially if you have more than 1 cat) and have them creating chaotic dots to follow or to choose. As for the complaints that it’s static and redundant/predictable, changing the angle of where it’s sitting, adding obstacles especially those that reflect (semi reflecting is best), and just be creative with the physics of how the light travels and you’ll find this is one cool toy (even the adults are mesmerized by it if you set the room up right). I like to hold it and watch it travel and adjust course (to keep it dynamic for the cat even a twitch in any direction changes it’s flow).Overall this is a well built toy, even turns itself off in 15 minutes (I think going too long the cat loses the curiosity of it so I leave it off and when she bugs me to turn it back on (and she does) I do. I change things in the lights potential path so she doesn’t catch on that it’s redundant. I thought my cat would attack the unit but she just didn’t- she looked at it for a few micro-seconds then the light darted her attention. It works very well in low lit rooms, dark rooms, and even daylight to some degree but darker is better especially if you cannot see all the things the light is traveling over (creating distortions like the Enterprise going into Warp! …is what it looks like). The light is a bright dot about 10x the size of a normal dot I think, but the dot is so bright (and even has an ‘aura’ around it ) that it morphs over things in the room it passes over. If you turn off the lights you can see a whole different perspective, but cats will dart into anything so make sure everything is safe :). We found our staircase (townhouse standard straight staircase with deep vaulted ceiling; lots of wall area and the beige stairs light up nicely- it’s an incredible effect in a staircase hallway although part of it pushes the dot way beyond the cats jumping reach but that’s when they stare and build up anticipation. I used it to get her to play with the cat tunnel toy too that I bought with this, and anxiety (the toy crackled like grocery bags so it scared her) disappeared. All in all it is what you think it is but use your head and don’t just throw it in a large floor space or you may think it’s stupid and ridiculous (I saw a video on YouTube of someone doing this and feared this was going to suck but it CERTAINLY DOESN’T! (My cat is right now nudging me to turn it back on as I write this). If you have a cat or several this is an amazing toy. After reading reviews I thought it would be great but that it would be nothing like the commercial or box described it but I find in the right room (not too big or if big with lots of things for the ‘light’ to ‘ride’ makes for human and cat entertainment. I don’t recommend just a large floor, it just gets old fast.

Not smart enough for my three devils.

Our cats loved, loved, loved this device until they found out a way to attack it at it’s source. We’d turn it on and just left the room. This device kept them busy for what seemed like an eternity. That was until our three little devils started chasing each other around the house again while knocking everything within their path on the floor. I walked into the room where I set the device up and it was on the floor with the laser pointing directly at the floor. I assume they grew tired of it not playing anymore and felt their time was better suited destroying everything we know and love in the house. If you can place this device somewhere your pets can’t get to then great this is probably worth a glance but if you’ve got some intelligent felines with no place they can’t get to then this may not be what you want. We still bring it out from time to time but the purpose of this purchase was to set it up without having to watch them while protecting the house from their mischief. It isn’t the products fault we just underestimated our pets.

    Cat’s love this

I like the fact it moves around the room so the cats can run after it. It does shine bright. Only thing I don’t like is, it will sometimes get stuck behind a door or something and doesn’t back up or find it’s way out

    My cat loves it!

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my Cat and decided to give it to him early. Glad I did because he loves it so much! I was a little worried because there are some bad reviews, and some of the things they said are correct.Cons:- It really is quite loud, so if you live in a very quiet home or you want to use the is as entertainment when you are trying to go to sleep, this toy might not be right for you. Because of how loud it is, it does cause him to become quite interested in the actual device itself, but if he’s playing, does it matter how he does it?- Again because of the noise and his interest in the actual device, he does stare at it. There is a warning that says not to point the laser directly into the eyes, but it does sometimes cross his sight. Reading the discussion on this item talking about the power of the laser being safe as long as there is not long term exposure puts my mind at ease, though. He’s not stupid enough to keep his eyes open when it flashes into his eyes, anyway.- The ‘manual mode’ is useless. It just makes it into an oversized laser pointer, and he seems sad because he doesn’t like how I do it as much. The best way to do ‘manual mode’ to me is to leave it on auto and just control the area you want it.Pros:- My cat loves it! As soon as he hears it, he knows to start looking around for it because it’s time to play!- Perfect distraction. My cat loves my bed, but it’s annoying because it makes it impossible to make it up! I just turn this thing on and he leaps off to play. It’s also nice because I can turn this on right before work to give him something to ease his sadness about me leaving.- The 15 minute timer is perfect because it seems to be the amount of time he’ll play before getting bored of it. As previously mentioned, it also gives me the chance to give him something to occupy his time while I’m busy, but I don’t have to worry about turning it off myself.- It has a directional switch that allows you to move the mirrors to make it work well in all sorts of areas. If your cat is anything like mine, his favorite is on the walls! He leaps up them to attack… It’s really quite funny! All in all, I am rating this highly because he loves it and it was reasonably priced. It has it’s kinks, but it works great for us and gives him a great toy and gives mom some free time!

I use rechargeable batteries and have to recharge them every day or two for this. Please make a plug-in rechargeable version of this! My cats love it but I don’t love unscrewing the battery compartment, charging the batteries, and replacing them three times a week.

    So much fun.

We have another automatic laser toy. But this one is better. The movement of the laser stays within a fairly tight radius which obviously expands as it is positioned at greater heightsIt stands on flat surfaces, and also has a hanger. So we can move it around the house. Our cat begs to have it turned on

    Automatic function hardly works

While my cats enjoy the laser, I’ve been debating returning and looking for a different product since mine will beep twice and run for 15 minutes, but never comes back on 2 hours later. It’s only automatically turned on once so far, which is frustrating.

Make sure it’s for you before you buy it.

Firstly, one of my young cats LOVES this toy. She runs and chases her “red light” while chirping madly until she’s absolutely exhausted, and still crying for more. If she’s in a “red light mood”, she’s been known to walk around crying for us to turn on her red light. On the other hand, my 1.5 year old cat could care less about this toy. In fact, she stares at the younger one like she’s lost her mind when she’s madly chasing an imaginary spot on the floor. In summary, my 1 year old would say the FroliCat is a MUST HAVE for all active kitties. She wouldn’t give it up for the world, and I’m delighted to see her have so much fun while being physically active. However, since my other girl wouldn’t even notice if I threw FroliCat in the garbage today, I think this toy is like all other cat toys, you’ll have to just try it out on your feline family members and see what they think. They are all so very different. Now, I’d like to discuss the logistical issues I think you should consider before purchasing this toy. In short, FroliCat is fragile. Most importantly, it’s easy to knock the device over, and crack the shell, or otherwise cause damage. It’s not a sturdy item, and it’s overall a poorly designed device when you consider there’s no stability factor to weigh it down, and protect it from the sudden falls, bangs and bumps that are inevitable for any cat toy. I’m disappointed it’s makers clearly forget they were designing a CAT TOY!Also, at least in my house, the mirror on the toy makes it difficult to position the red dot. My cat wants the red dot to move in a realistic fashion. In other words, my cat wants the dot to dart around like ground prey. In her mind, she knows a bird would be able to go over counters, fly through the air, scale items like A BIRD, but……A MOUSE would be limited to moving only on the ground. The FroliCat confuses her when it does both movements (ground and air) at random intervals. Since she wants to “catch” FroliCat (that IS the point here), this toy naturally leaves her confused and annoyed, which leads to her losing interest all together, and just deciding to walk away……….but only for a short time. Eventually, my little girl wants to give red dot a second chance, so she decides to give mom another try at getting red dot right. Thus, she returns to demand that red dot be reinstated correctly. That means I have to spend at least 10 minutes each day trying to arrange, and rearrange, the placement of the FroliCat toy, as well as its built-in mirror, to ensure the dot will remain on (or around) the floor, and not on the ceiling or in midair. Simply put, I find it maddening that it’s this difficult to make this toy just meet the basic needs of its intended audience, feline hunters. So, please consider your available time and willingness to tinker with FroliCat before you decide to make this purchase. In my experience, it’s a high maintenance toy that was not designed with your feline’s interest in mind. Sure, your cat may love the toy, but you may personally regret your decision to buy the thing. I’m giving it 3 stars on behalf of my little girl, but I would personally give it a zero.

    My cat loves this thing!

So easy to set up, and very useful on those days when I will be out of the house for a while or need to run distraction so I can get things done. My cat really enjoys the random movement, and it’s safe to say this has become a part of the main “kit” of toys we keep around for her.

Entertains my 3 cats for about 2 minutes.

I bought this to replace a previous cat laser toy that broke and feel like this was kind of a downgrade for many reasons. (For reference, this is in comparison to a product like the Valonii rechargeable cat laser toy). I chose two lasers since my cats would run into each other trying to chase one light. I think these were both relatively the same price. One just has an extra laser.1. The valonii product would turn on automatically every hour for a few minutes and shut off automatically. It was connected to an outlet to charge, which I would leave in overnight, and the battery would last maybe over a day. This toy needs to be manually turned on each time and runs on batteries.2. The motion range for the laser on the valonii covered more surface area of the cat corner while the double laser toy somehow had smaller range of motion. The higher/lower the laser was placed from the ground, the worse it would be for the cats, since the laser only moves back and forth and MAYBE tilts upwards a little against the wall; none of my cats enjoyed the laser on the wall of it meant they couldn’t reach it. It had to be in the right position. The valonii product had a wider more random motion set for the singular laser and all three of my cats would spend each hour of the night chasing it-this was great for night zoomies or while I would be away from work. It was kept on top of my microwave for optimal height.3. Even when my 3 cats start enjoying the laser, it only lasts a couple minutes since they get bored of the same back and forth motion. It’s not really random. In general, I’m gonna have to go back to my previous laser brand to replace this one. Big disappointment.

    Really does engage your pet.

I was thinking this wasn’t going to get my cat to play with it. And he didn’t at first. He mostly just watched it. Then all of a sudden he took after the light and he was busy for quite some time with it. So were the dogs. I have three dogs and a cat and they actually seemed to collaborate and circle the enemy and attack. I’ve not been leaving it out, but the cat has found it and I put it down and he played with it. I’ve only had it a few days, but it seems well made, solid, sturdy. In fact, I ordered it for a friend of mine too as he has a cat and a dog. He was getting such a kick out of watching my pets play with it, so I ordered him one again. He’ll be tickled to get it.

My blue abyssinian has figured out how to turn it on

I bought this unit just over a year ago and I only let the cats play with it a few times a week (3-4) so they wouldn’t get bored of it. That is until recently when my six month old blue figured out how to turn it on when she wants to play… I work from home a lot and she has figured out that if she brings me a toy to play catch with enough times while I am talking to the strange box on the desk that makes human sounds, that her human will get up off his ass and turn the Bolt on to keep her occupied. Glad to be of service…Meanwhile, her fifteen month old step brother is now more entertained watching her chase the laser than chasing it himself. He is good for maybe five minutes, she will look for a restart before she tires of it. Your kitty toy mileage may vary. My older female had minimal interest once she figured out it wasn’t alive, my kitten knows it is not alive but is always game for the hunt and disappointed when her fifteen minutes are up.The unit itself is quite complex for a 17$ toy. It has fallen on ceramic tiles with feline assistance many times and the mirror control is now taped in place. It bounces if it falls in any way other than on the base, then it thuds. So far, no cracks…The fact that it still runs at all is impressive. The fact that the mirror setting no longer moves is irrelevant, as I always run it in the full up position because that produces a tight oval shape for the laser which I have found is the best setting as it is similar to just moving back and forth from one end of the room to the other and sometimes makes for a long chase. Change the size of your oval by raising the height of the Bolt. The higher up you put it, the larger/longer the oval is. Two feet up or less is a good place to start testing what is best for your room. At ground level with mirror setting full up, you get a six foot oval.As the mirror and laser are both motor controlled, it goes through batteries quite quickly; but you could fix this with rechargeable ones. There is no AC adapter or even jack for said on the device. But did I mention it was 17$ delivered with Prime? It does not zig zag. It’s design and the laws of physics prevent that despite some reviews to the contrary. It produces ovals of varying size and “randomly” moves the laser back and forth along the lines of said static shape. This is a good thing as you can see after a few seconds where the laser’s edges are and place the oval in a spot that is kitty friendly. You don’t want to send your furry friend chasing the laser into places you don’t want them after all. Some random stalking areas near the laser’s path will increase the feline fun. This is perhaps the best overall automatic cat toy I have seen for the money IF your cat likes lasers.Updated: 6/18/14 – Product is now held together with super glue and tape and cats have only minimal interest in it now. Dropped to 4 stars but still was worth the price

    Disappointed

Package came and the box inside had been crushed and then taped together with clear tape. The cat laser tower already had batteries inside so it had obviously been sent to someone else and they returned it. My dogs and cats both love to play with lasers and they like this one. However, if I had wanted to purchase a previously USED product, I would have done so.Disappointed that I paid for a brand new cat toy and received one that someone else used and discarded.

Nice, compact automatic laser. It’s louder than expected when on.

I’ve been using the PetSafe Automatic Laser Cat Toy over the past few days to entertain my two heathens: Griffin and Benji. Griffin is a two year old tabby that comes running at the click of a handheld laser button, and is primarily why I got this toy. Benji just turned one, and is interested in lasers but not as much as Griffin. This automatic laser has two functions from the single button on the side: You can press it once and get 15 minutes of play time one time, or hold it till you hear a loud, distinctive beep, and you will get 15 minutes of play time every two years… seemingly till the batteries run out. In my experience, both of my cats become disinterested around the 10 minute mark and spend the rest of the time watching it likes it’s some form of TV, so it’s a great length of time.It has a great range of motion, and you can change it by positioning the device higher or lower on different surfaces. I’ve found that if I get it too high up (about 10 feet +), it becomes too difficult for my cats to see on the floor unless it’s nighttime. But that’s when I get the best range of motion to interest Griffin, who likes to chase lasers up and down hallways. Otherwise, the range is can be a little too short to keep him interested past the 5 minute mark. Rather, Benji loves it, and comes running when he hears it automatically turn on.(Added to original review: To add on to the range of motion, if you’d like to add some variety to it try to hang the laser where it doesn’t lean against a wall or door. By doing that, the machine inside will cause the whole unit to bounce around a bit while on, causing the laser to bounce around much more a create a “bug” effect. Just figured this out today and now Griffin LOVES this thing!)This laser also might be louder than you expect. You can hear the laser mechanism inside moving the entire time it’s on (sounds just like hearing a motion sensor camera panning, repeatedly. for 15 minutes). If the Tv is on, it’s easy to ignore. It’s best to have it about 10+ feet away from you (or in another room) if you don’t want to listen to it.All in all, it’s a great, compact laser that my cats have been thoroughly enjoying (every two hours).

Seems to be more interesting to the humans…

Our cats love lights on the floor and walls, and laser pointers do the job nicely. We thought this would be a good treat for our cats.I think our cats tire of it pretty quickly. Maybe our cats are fat, lazy indoor cats that get out of breath easily… but after a bit they just lay there in the middle of the light’s path. The toy is pretty noisy – the motor creating the motion makes a loud whirring, about the sound level you wish your blender would blend at. The first few times we turned it on, the cats were more interested in the noise and paying attention to this weird thing. That being said, we have had some enjoyable times with our younger cat dancing (almost literally) to catch the light… it gets a few minutes of enjoyment for them. Our 6-year old cat seems to be less interested in it.Neat product, I don’t regret buying it, but don’t expect your cats to be babysat by it while you’re not around.

My cats got bored within minutes

Great idea, and would be awesome for mostly all kittens. Probably because they don’t know any better yet. 😂 My friend’s kitten loves this thing. So I thought I would buy one for my cats. But neither of my cats are interested for more than a few minutes. I have tried them on several other occasions, trying to catch them in optimal playful moods, but it really doesn’t matter. They know it’s just a phony, a light thst flashes a short distance away, moves a foot or two and then disappears very quickly, too quickly, I think. The motion of these lights does not provoke the predatory and play instinct in my cats the way it does when I use a hand laser and mimic a mouse or bird. Plus, it’s really not great for exercise because of the fact that the light doesn’t go very far when it does move. When I use a hand laser, I can run that thing all the way across the house and back, which gives both cats an opportunity to really run and chase that “shiny red bug that keeps trying to get away.” And with a manual pointer, I can turn it off for a minute or so, making it “go into hiding,” and really build the suspense before bringing it back into their line of sight again. It’s more work for me doing it manually, but definitely gives them a much better and much needed work out and engagement than this gadget.

    Cat Chaser

I do like this product, but it has a couple issues. One, cats knock it over because of the sound, so it distracts them. Second the light goes a bit too fast, and it’s all over the place. Finding a place for it is touch because of the pateren. It’s all over, and large TV’s may be an issues or anything in your house. Use with caution.

Can adjust the laser, good for my senior cat, stays on for about 5-10 minutes

The media could not be loaded.

This is a great toy for my senior Miss Kitty. My cats are picky about their toys and I have wondered if they have attention deficit disorder cuz they will play with something and drop it a bit later, unless it has a treat in it like the treat dispenser toy. So i thought, well, I’ll try this. I got it. Put in the batteries and immediately the youngest was interested. The two older kitties took some time, like a day , to get used to it, but now they love it. My senior Miss Kitty actually started hiding and pouncing again. So much fun. I found that they like it better when i hold it and direct it a little, what little you can direct it. They they go nuts. I move the laser director button all the way to the front. It’s a little slide on the top where you can adjust where the laser goes. I keep it directed at the ground more and they seem to like that, being able to see it and pounce on it. Also saves my curtains and pictures. I also like that it stays on for about 5-10 minutes and shuts off so it saves the batteries. It would be nice to be able to set it to come on and go off every half hour or so. Thanks for the toy. It gives good exercise to the older cats and takes them from a sleepy world to a playful one. I didn’t realize how lazy they had gotten!! Took them a few hours, a day to catch on, the older ones.

    Nice Toy

This toy is pretty good but you can accomplish the same with a cheaper laser pen. Works well for lazy folks I guess. It makes random patterns and sometimes goes up or onto things I don’t want my cat jumping at. When it goes behind her she is too lazy to turn around and look for it, just waits for it to appear in front of her again.

    Fun, but loud

Not bad for the price. My cats seem happy with this product, but it is very loud. Our cats didn’t even play with this once. One of them is not the brightest crayon and ended up just staring straight into theaser coming out of the toy, BUT overall the light was very small when shining on the floor or wall; the light pattern as way too fast for my cats’ taste regardless of what height I out it at; it never actually would turn on more than once despite the ad and instructions saying it would with the correct settings; so we returned it.

    Annoying

I gave my cats this toy for Christmas. My cats have two different personalities. One is kitten-like and playful and endless intrigued by toys. The other one is shrewd and analytical and quickly decided this toy was beneath him. Even the playful cat got a bit bored with the repetitive pattern of the laser movements. The device is noisy and sounds like a remote control car. It’s forever getting stuck under furniture or on the edge of rugs. It’s like that annoying baby toy someone buys your kid. You grow to hate it quickly as you have to stand up every 60 seconds and “unstuck” it. Even my playful cat gets a bit bored of the repetitive motion and noises. Wouldn’t recommend it. A regular, old hand-held laser pointer is far better!

    It’s decent

Honestly, I was hoping for more out of this. My boys are kittens and LOVE the handheld laser, but if I go to work or need to study, I wanted to have an automated one. It’s a bit too fast sometimes, but it does get their attention. It’s a little loud and one of my boys kept attacking it at first because of that, but then he got used to the noise. They don’t play with it very long as they have a TON of energy and get bored easily, but it’s alright. Honestly, their favorite toys so far have been lightweight balls they can knock around and chase as well as a chirping bird toy and a flopping fish toy.

Convenient Pet Exercise for Cats AND Dogs

When I picked them up to put them in my lap, I kind of thought my cat and toy poodle were feeling a little extra heavy. Then I took Lily for a hair cut and found out–under all those cute curls was a poodle who had “porked up” big time over the winter! Plus, my cute litle Maine Coon “kitten” had turned into a “teenage” couch potato cat who now weighed in at 18 lbs. What to do? I could walk the dog, but to do for the cat?The one thing they both like to chase is are the hand held laser light or a “laser mouse.” Poodles are retrievers. Cats are mousers. However, making sure they both got 15-30 minutes of “play” a day was easier said than done. So, I decided to try the FroliCat BOLT laser light. It’s working! They are now chasing the “automatic” mouse (and each other) several times a day. After a month of diet and exercise Lily has lost almost a pound. Chip not so much, but at least he’s “off the couch and I think it’s good for his mind! When I have time I like to join in the play, adding the hand held lights so they have more than one beam to chase. However,if I am short on time, the nice thing is I can set up the toy, do what I need to do, and they will still get the exercise they need. Sometimes Chip prefers to just watch Lily but, usually he will join in with her. The toy also keeps Lily from barking when I am on the phone!I am going to order the second, more sophisticated model to add to the mix. For Lily, I need to be able to control the patterns better making sure the “mouse” stays on the floor. Chip kind of likes when the spot becomes a laser “bird.” Being able to set the toy for an extendeded amount of time will also be helpful.I agree this model is a little hard on batteries. If they do an update, I would consider adding a model that could use plug in an adapter, sort of like the kind of charger on an electric toothbrush. Otherwise, good value for the price, but I would add that your pet will like it better if you “play” too!

The best cat “toy” I’ve bought

We have 5 indoor-only cats and this is the best cat toy we have purchased. The cats actually come to us when the unit turns off as if to say, “Hey, turn that thing back on. We’re not done playing!” They love it and get excited when they think we may turn it on for them. Talk about easy too; all we have to do is push a button. Years ago, I would use a regular pen light and had to work to make the thing dash around the room. This toy does this for me and my cats are being entertained and EXERSISED while I am getting other things done around the house. Our cats are young (the oldest is around 4 years old) and into anything that moves. One thing I wish all reviewers of cat toys would mention is if their cat(s) are de-clawed because this makes a big difference in how active they are or possibly aren’t. From past experience I realize most de-clawed cats lose their “hunter” instincts and usually aren’t interested in most toys. Our cats are not de-clawed and thus are very active and love to hunt things. A bug that makes it into our home has no chance at all. So, if you have a lazy, older, and/or de-clawed cat, this toy may not be appreciated by them.As another reviewer stated, it would be nice to have this unit with an optional time setting of more than 15 minutes. I barely get started on something downstairs and my cats are coming to get me because the unit has turned off and they want me to turn it on again. :- It is amazing how quickly they learned I am an integral part of their toy’s operation. :-)We have this sitting on a short table and it points outward onto an open area of the room. One reviewer stated when her unit arrived it wouldn’t work; the light kept freezing. When she called the company, the sales rep told her to tap the bottom of the unit and it would begin working again. This same thing happened to me and I did as the rep told the other woman. After two times of the unit sticking in place and my tapping it, I have had no further problems. The batteries have lasted quite some time. I plan to buy some rechargables not only to save money but for conservation reasons as well. The day this unit dies, I will immediately buy another. It is a very inexpensive toy compared to so many others I have seen and unfortunately, spent money on. :-Good luck to all of you and your furry babies. Thanks for giving them a good life which it is apparent you do or else you wouldn’t be shopping for cat toys. :- The greatness of a nation can be seen by how its animals are treated. ~Ghandi

This thing goes thru batteries fast, no way to plug in, no motion sensor, no suction cup. However my cats and chihuahua still love it. It’s better than the other one for sale that has motion sensor and plug in my opinion. Light is very bright but dims as batteries die and it doesn’t stay on for full 15 min when batteries are dying either.

Only one out of two cats approve!

I’ve had this product for over two years and have used it with two different cats with very different results: one loves it and one has zero interest. Despite the mixed results, I gave this 5 stars because it does exactly what it is says it does. This product produces a red laser light that moves erratically around the room to capture the attention of your cat (it can also be set to produce a steady beam, but my cats fail to see the fun of that setting). One of the features I really like is that this laser toy has an automatic off after approximately 15 minutes which really helps save the battery life. Also, there is a little knob on the back of the “head” that shifts the mirror the light reflects off of so you can customize the range of the laser. I live in an apartment and at the farthest, this laser will shoot all the way up on my far wall (cat nails on a wall are similar to teacher nails on a chalkboard) so it is good that I am able to adjust the range so that the beam stays on my floor. I also like that periodically the beam will “freeze” for 2-3 seconds, giving my un-stealthy cat a tiny bit of a chance of “catching” the red dot.One minor thing I don’t like is that this toy is pretty noisy, if you ask me. It reminds me of one of those remote control cars kids use. Imagine a kid adjusting the direction of the car every second; that is the sound you get for 15 minutes. But, despite that, I really like this and would recommend you try it. My one cat, who is 6 years old and has been with me for the past 1.5 years, never fails to find this toy wildly entertaining; he’ll come running from another room when he hears it turn on. He’s not much of an athlete so after about 7 minutes of head flailing and unrewarded pouncing, he plops down and just watches the beam for the second half of the show. My other cat, who is 3 years old and has been with me since he was three months old, is way too smart for his own good and discovered the source of the laser beam after about three uses so he wouldn’t bother going after the red dot on the floor, and would nose at the toy itself, knocking it over. Now, he pretty much ignores it, but he does get a kick out of watching my other cat go crazy trying to catch the beam.Obviously cats are fickle creatures and not all will take to this, but I’d say it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. I feel less guilty about being an absent cat parent when I can turn this on before I leave for ten hours on a work day, or when I get home from work exhausted, and can easily provide my cats a reasonable amount of entertainment.

    Best invention ever

Let me start by saying I got this for my 90lb doberman cause he’s a cat at heart and love to chase everything. This product has survived him knocking it down multiple times and accidentally being throw down our driveway. The one thing I wish it came with a hook attached to the main body when hung the movement of the laser spins the device around and shine the laser on the exterior walls of the house. The dog is not the brightest and is highly intent of getting this light so we have muddy paw prints all up the sides of my house. But he’s happy and I don’t have hurt my hand shining a light for him.

The cats have AWAKENED!! At the cost of AA batteries

I agree with other reviewers who mentioned the bowling pin-like, unsturdy shape and limited ‘random’ pattern options.Unlike some other negative experiences, this ingenious little gadget not only automated the little red dot I had gotten my lazy cat addicted to, but the other two cats in the house who appeared disinterested and aloof as my cat practically did somersaults and midair backflips trying to kill that dot, were suddenly transformed into red dot stalking superhero cat red dot killers. Who knew those lazy felines were that fast and alert?!That awakening of those lazy-assed animals into active, predatory and social alpha mammals was worth the $20!!If someone would have bet me $60 and said they would transform those cats’ demeanor in two weeks with no additional effort or training, I would have slapped $60 on the table right then! When I lost the money, it wouldn’t have been a big deal, cause it was worth it!!!Unfortunately, it took two weeks, and in those two weeks, it ate 4AA batteries every day… that’s 56 batteries. I can’t afford that kind of battery consumption, so I’m looking for a plug-in version or a different pattern mechanism that doesn’t require so much power to drive. Rechargeable batteries are weak, so no.A strong 4 stars. It’s be 5 if the batteries lasted longer an/or if I didn’t have to get really creative about how to place it so the pattern hits the areas where they chase it, instead of the ceiling or on top of the kitchen table or my desk.I’d recommend this pet toy, but with a strong warning to buy two 60 packs of AA batteries!!

    2 Different Cats Ignored This

I really wanted to like it. We’ve all seen cats go crazy chasing laser dots. It’s hilarious. However, both the cynical Mr. Shrimps, our 7-year old tom, and our daughter’s 8 week old kitten, did not go for this toy.In both cases, they were attracted to the sound and/or motion of the laser device itself rather than the dot on the floor. Both cats climbed up and stuck their little kitty faces right up to the laser. This doesn’t seem like a good thing for their kitty vision, so I’m thinking that this toy is a no.

    Destroyer of homes!!

This product is a absolute disaster!!! Personally, I’d give it one star but I gave it 2 simply because it had my son rolling with laughter which was pretty great. The product itself is terrible. The laser is extremely fast, but let’s talk real here. If you think you can just pull it out of the package and turn it on for hours of fun YOU ARE SOOOOO WRONG!! This product completely destroyed my living room in seconds. I put the batteries in and turned it on just to test it out. I had it sitting on the floor and at first it was pretty normal, laser going in circles on the floor as the cats watched and began to get ready to pounce. But then, out of freaking no where, this laser goes straight onto the walls and I’m not talking low, but high on the walls. Before I could react, I had cats crashing into my shelves, knocking off everything, jumping from the back of the couch onto the curtains and ripping down them. I rushed to the laser in a frantic attempt to turn it off, but once I picked it up, the laser is now going all over the place! Now the dog has joined in and it’s just a mess. I finally got the darn thing off, but now I’ve got a ton of stuff to clean up, a broken tv that the dog knocked off the entertainment center, and 3 cats that I’m pretty sure now have permanent brain damage from running into each other repeatedly in their CRAZY attempt to catch this super fast laser 😑. Needless to say, I will not be using this product EVER again.

XL dog and 1/2 cats love this! Highly recommend!

Purchased this one of our high anxiety cats to keep her busy and wear her out. She loves it. But so does our XL Mountain Cur dog of 116lbs. we rescued. He absolutely loves it even more than the cat. It is amusing to watch them both play with it. The dog chases it all over the place. With it being so hot down here in the deep south, this is a great way to give him some much needed indoor exercise. Easy to set up and use. Will update review if necessary, but so far we all like this toy. Works just as advertised. Seems durable enough. Our big boned Cur knocked it down once without any damage. Highly recommend. Of course, make sure your dog follows voice commands so if he gets too rough you can stop him before he destroys anything. Our big boy is gentle but tends to overdo things. He follows commands immediately so we can stop him if necessary.

    It’s okay

The cats know where the light is coming from and they get close up to inspect! The patern moves too fast and too repetitive. My cats lose interest. I like to use the Bolt laser in addition to a little handheld laser pointer. Simultaneously. That is more entertaining!

    Broke within 3 months

So my cat is really particular about toys and is usually over it fairly soon but he loved this until it just stopped working… Only three months after I purchased it… I actually thought this was really great because I would turn it on in the morning before I went to work, so then every two hours it would automatically turn on. I would also turn it off as soon as I got home so I don’t know why it broke after three months. I tried multiple new batteries and it just would not work…Update: so I ended up calling the actual company that makes this and it is under a one-year warranty so they sent me another one. So great customer service and response to these issues.

Cats and Dogs Love This Laser Toy

My cats love this toy. The youngest runs around chasing the light, sliding to a stop on a rug, looking under and around the rug. She leaps up the wall after the light and around corners. This is the best laser for pets. It can be turned on and it will run on its own, varying the light pattern for a full 15 minutes and then automatically shuts itself off. Or, if you want in on the game, with one extra click you can control where the light goes while your pet chases after it. My youngest prefers to play this way. She likes to hunt the light. With the light on automatic, it changes too fast for her to stare down her prey before jumping into action trying to capture the light we call “Spot.”The older cat also chases after the light, faster than he has run in the past year. This is a great toy to keep pets occupied or to play with them. In either mode, the laser automatically turns off after 15 minutes. This is when the laser “takes a rest” in our house. Otherwise, the cats want me to play with them all morning or evening. I used to get those small pen lights, but they ran through batteries quickly, were hard on my fingers, and a pain to hold for extended times. They also easily became lost. This laser is large enough not to be easily lost, is good on batteries, and easy and comfortable to hold and maneuver. The pen lights might be cheaper at first, but when you add in the batteries–and most use more expensive camera batteries not AA–and the lost pens that must be replaced, this laser is a cheaper option in the long run. Besides, unless you have extremely talented pets with movable thumbs, they cannot play with the pen lights without your help. This lazer light can be played with on their own with one little click on a button. 15 minutes of play for them and peace for you. Or join in and have a few good laughs at your pets expense as they go crazy trying to catch the light. Try putting it on their paw or leg and see how nutty they go trying to get away from it. Great fun for everyone at a really good price for a long lasting laser.HIGHLY RECOMMEND

    I has happy kittehs!

It may not be a cheezburger, but almost as good as far as I can tell from my cats’ reactions. True, the “random” pattern is akin to sketching an oval by hand. However, I find it far superior to the Bada-beam which spins in circles and pauses; spin, spin, spin, pause and repeat. Eventually my older cat becomes bored and just lays down in the pathway of the Bada-beam laser.I’m finding the pattern difficult to explain, but this laser retraces the circle/oval a few inches before moving further around and then pauses, then repeats. The back and forth in a section a few inches long is what really gets my cats. There is one button. Press it and the laser runs for 15 minutes and then shuts off. Or you could tease them by pressing the button again to prematurely shut it off. The shape of the product is convenient for holding, which I use to add a bit extra to the pattern occasionaly. A strong plus after the awkward shape of the Bada-beam – cones are not easy to hold if you would like to interact occasionaly with your self-interacting cat toy.I like that this product is white and not lime green or bright pink or some other crazy color that does not blend well into scenary. I have some bright colors in my home, but the white provides the cat toy with a certain amount of incognito-ness. Of course the large cat tower in the living room gives everything away. Lol. (:Another plus, it is by far more quiet than the Bada-beam. Which is stellar, because now before I head to bed, the cats “ask” for me to start up the laser. I officially think it has become part of the daily routine.Even though I don’t believe any self-perpetuating, patterned, laser toy can ultimately/perfectly replace the manual hand-held laser toy, the FroliCat BOLT Interactive Laser Pet Toy does a fairly good job at it, especially when they want to play and you want to sleep.I am happy with my purchase and so is Octavian, Sam, and Eins.UPDATE: March 19, 2012…. CATS STILL LOVE THE LASER! And the laser still works as good as the day I bought it. And it has fallen down stairs, off the cat tower, off the coffee table. Cannot say we’ve been really nice to it, but it has been nice to us. I would definitely recommend this item for purchase.

    Just a novelty toy

The laser isn’t strong enough for my dogs to see it during daylight hours. Which is probably for safety reasons, for their eyes, but it’s just not bright enough. They’re mire concerned with barking at the unit itself, than chasing the laser. I’ll stick to my handheld laser or a flashlight. They like both. Lol

Not as exciting as I thought

I was really excited to buy this toy for my 3 month old kitten after reading the product description and others’ reviews, but once I learned how the toy worked and then tried it out on my kitten, I was really disappointed in it.The toy works by producing a laser beam aimed at the top of the device which is then reflected by an adjustable mirror. The laser beam generator travels in a circle, sometimes doubling back on its path then resuming its circle, and the laser reflects on to the carpet (unless it’s set on anything higher than a short coffee table). I was also worried when the kitten looked up a couple times and may have had the laser pointed in her eye (there many warning stickers saying, “danger, laser radiation, avoid exposure). The product description claims:1. “Entertain you and your cat with automatically generated red laser patterns”2. “Use it in automatic or manual mode”3. “Auto shutdown after 15 minutes”4. “Hold in hand or place on flat surface”1. “Patterns” is misleading. It travels in a circle that will sometimes double or triple back on its path to “trick” the cat, but a clever cat will sit and wait for the circle to resume, rather than engaging in the trick and chasing the light. Other disappointing things about the circular “patterns” is that it didn’t even move very far. The only way for the red dot to travel any decent amount of distance is if I placed the toy up high and had a large empty room devoted to the cat. The point of light also doesn’t move as fast as implied by some of the reviews I’ve read. It moved about as fast as my kitten can walk, and she almost never had to run to chase the laser. The laser did pause quite often, though, and the kitten had plenty of time to sit down and stare at it for a few seconds. The toy was not as engaging as the description or some other reviews implied.2. There is no “manual mode”. The closest thing a user can get to a “manual mode” is to pick the toy up. Even then, the laser continues on its slow circles with frequent pauses. One good point about the “manual mode” is that my cat actually became interested in the toy and ran after the dot, trying to catch it.3. I had this shipped to work (my boss owns a cat and was interested) and I tried it out there. I didn’t time it, but it ran for a long, boring while, so this is probably true.4. Hold in hand, as far as I can tell, is the “manual mode” I mentioned in point 2. I think this was added as a filler to make the product seem more exciting. A note about putting it on a flat surface: If you put it on a hard surface, like a desk or coffee table, the laser’s noise gets amplified. I left the toy on the coffee table for the kitten to play with and I could hear it from my bedroom. I can’t hear it in another room when it’s on the carpet, but it’s somewhat annoying while in the same room.
