Seems like a fine lil’ bar

I am going to admit right up front I have yet to use this bar on the job.I am a semi-retired flooring installer and a woodworker of some thirty + years of experience. Semi-retired means I am no longer on MY knees for forty hours a week…instead I make sure the guys on the floor have what they need to stay on THEIR knees because we get paid for the product we install…not getting up and chasing down product and tools. With that in mind, I jokingly refer to myself as ‘the walking toolbag’. I carry pencils, a speed square, a tape measure, a utility knife…and a prybar at all times. I am used to ‘losing’ pencils but it chaps my hide to lose a prybar, something that happens frequently. So while scanning the options available here, I had in mind finding something that looked a little bit different than the standard blue or black bar. I sure found it in this product!!! Like I alluded to before, I have a bit of experience. I feel qualified to rate a tool like this before use. Here goes: the bar is of a slightly heaver gauge that the common hardware store brands…not much, but enough to be noticable. That’s fine in my case as the bar will be used more to pry the last row of flooring in place than remove…let’s say trim and baseboards. In my hand it feels more like a tool…than a bit of fluff. The edges of the bar have been rounded enough that there are no sharp burrs left from the manufacturers processes. The ends are ground rather than stamped. There is a unique side-pulling feature for trim nails. There is unique edge stamping at one end that should offer a better grip to the bar while pulling trim. There is a unique paint scheme from every other trim bar in existence. There is even a beverage (😉) opener! Last but not least in my mind, Spec Ops donates a small percentage of the sale to Veterans organizations. So, having said my piece, I am happy with my purchase. I got the two-piece offering, which was a buck or so more than a single bar would cost at the orange box store. Heaven help the installer that thinks THIS bar is his….mmuuhhhhaaaa!!!! 🤣🤣🤣UPDATE: After a week on the job, both installers tried several times to ‘keep’ this bar… blatantly. Both asked “Hey, Woody. Can I keep it?” I just smiled…the kind that freezes ice…and told them where to find one of their own. It held up well to the kind of abuse that folk in the trades give to tools that they don’t own. I can’t recommend this lil pry bar enough to anyone in the market for a tool like this!

    Love the size, but . . .

A tool bag favorite for me! My only regret is that this doesn’t have a notch on the ends for easy nail pulling. It is great for quick adjustments or extra support leverage when needed. Is effective with its sharp edges in getting between jams/trim/ect. I have absolutely no regrets purchasing this tool. It is well made and extremely durable!

Poor finish and identical thickness to imports

The tool looks quite impressive and fancy when opening the box, but the finishes on the business ends are terrible. It feels thick in the hands, but when measured against three other brands that I bought at the same time, it’s actually the exact same as the thinnest of the group. The tool felt a little more flexible than others in the group that were the same thickness, which made me wonder if the tool is actually a bit thinner than the others, but with a thicker paint. One scraper was visibly non-uniform and the paint clearcoat had separated at another spot. On the whole, a poorly finished product. There are numerous others at around this price point that offer considerably better quality and strength. The vet-donation is a nice marketing idea, if they actually carry-through on that promise, but you’re looking to use the tool, right? So buy the tool you want and just hand a $1 directly to a homeless person. One in ten homeless people are US vets and this vulnerable population is the most needy in the nation, so that little alternate personal gift will more than make up for buying a different brand than this one if that was a feature of this tool that appealed to you.

Good small bar, mediocre trim bar, U-notch only, no V-notch for smaller nails

Got this Spec Ops Tools 9.5in Trim Bar 2-pack for use in remodeling projects in an old farmhouse, woodworking projects in a small workshop, salvaging materials for both, and LAN tech work for help with running cable & installing jacks around trim.Design is good for a small pry bar but has a significant flaw for use as a trim bar, there is no V-notch for pulling smaller nails, so a second nail puller tool is required. Build quality is good, it’s well made, steel has a little springiness to it, machining is clean (no burs), good tough paint. Functionality is fairly good, works as expected, except for removing smaller nails.Price point is consistent with similar items. Glad to see this is made in a functioning democracy (albeit domestic would be better) and is supporting our Veterans.Tip, with a die grinder or rotary tool or precision file, and some skill, the U-notches can be turned into V-notches, but be sure the V-notch does not come to a very sharp point which can lead to cracking, needs a slight rounding slightly smaller than the smallest nail expected (e.g. small brad pins).Overall, 4 stars, good small bar, mediocre trim bar, U-notch only, no V-notch for smaller nails.

Durable: A Spec Ops Tools 9.5” Trim Bar 2-Pack Review

I own and heavily use a heavy-duty trim bar. It’s one of those tools I didn’t know I needed until I bought one for a remodel project. The larger and thicker size makes my trim bar ideal for demolition but too hefty for carefully salvaging trim. I ordered the Spec Ops Tools 9.5” trim bars, made in an undisclosed country, for more delicate tasks. These high-carbon steel trim bars weigh 4.9 oz, are about 1/8” thick, and are covered by a lifetime limited warranty. Features include sharp beveled edges, an integrated ruler, siding nail pullers, an onboard nail puller, a bottle opener, and a 90° strike surface end. This tool is better suited for getting into tight spaces without causing unwanted damage.I was able to pull some 4” baseboards off the wall using this trim bar. First, I slid the straight edge in from the top, then used the bent end from underneath. Once I loosened one end of the baseboard, the remaining was easier to pry from the wall. After the baseboard was removed, I pulled any nails left behind. I feel like a hammer would be easier to pull nails with, but I removed all of them with this trim bar with little effort. It may be that I’m not used to pulling nails this way. My big bar has a wedge on one edge that works like a hammer. The sturdy Spec Ops Tools 9.5” trim bar is an effective tool for salvaging trim and pulling siding. If you need a smaller trim bar, this Spec Ops trim bar will get the job done and open your refreshing beverage when you’re done.► PROS:Socially responsible companyDurable and lightweightLimited lifetime warranty► CONS:Pulling nails may feel less natural

Okay pry bars but have limitations

Sept. 16, 2022: Having spent today dismantling an enormous shipping crate for a very heavy, standalone bathtub, I am compelled to upgrade my rating of this pry bar to 4 stars. For basic deconstruction, these bars work very well — probably five stars — but I stand by my original comments when it comes to deconstruction in the vicinity of finish surfaces.Original review: I want to like like these pry bars, and do — sort of. Their overall size, weight, and balance is good, as is the steel thickness and type. But I use pry bars of this size for removing finish trim and I want to minimize damage to the surface the trim was attached to. Aspects of this tool make this harder than I’d like without “tuning”.The blade end bevels are ground too steep (25±°) and coarse for my liking. Not a major complaint, but without being very careful, I was gouging the underlying surface I was prying against. Rounding the corners of both ends as well as the bevel edge helped a lot. Also, the bevel is ground on the outside of the short end of the ‘L’ (see photo). It’s certainly easier for manufacturing but the crisp back edge of the bevel tends to act as the initial fulcrum when prying, leaving a dent/divot in the surface you’re prying against. Feathering the back end of the bevel helps some, but … you get the idea. Also, the nail-pulling slots are too wide to engage the heads of smaller finish nails. On the positive side, the metal is stiff but has some spring so light hammering on it isn’t painful. The nail pulling slots on the edges are a brilliant idea for removing nails along the bottom edge of baseboards, but again, too wide for small finish nails — simple wedge slots would have been better. The bottle opener is a nice touch, but doesn’t make up for the deficiencies to me.

    Solid small pry bars

These pry bars are perfect for their intended purpose – slipping in tight spaces and starting to pry, or prying progressively across small trim. They are nicely beveled, and helped me to start prying surfaces that my Wonder Bar could not fit into. They are not ideal for prying very large pieces, or those secured with long, thick nails. They don’t have enough leverage for big jobs, and they will start seriously biting into pieces if you try to force them to pry something too big – there is a decent risk of splitting a big piece and having a pry bar flying at out.The nail pulls were basically useless in my testing, and I would not count on them to work. I debated docking a star for this because at this price point for a two pack – the item delivers what I want it to do. Ultimately I did deduct the star because there are 3 pulls and none work well, which was frustrating to have a tool that should work but won’t

    Well Made…Versatile

These ‘Spec Ops Tools 9.5″ Trim Bars’ are a great addition to my workshop. I’m always looking for trim vars to remove a molding or something, and these work good. These ‘Spec Ops Tools 9.5″ Trim Bar’ are easy to hold and handle…even with my big paws. I just wish the pair came in two different sizes.I’ve used these trim bars a couple of times during a friend’s kitchen remodel to remove moldings and even cabinets. They worked great. I especially like the integrated nail pullers and ‘caulk slicers’ in each bar. The came in very handy.Given the good quality of these ‘Spec Ops Tools 9.5″ Trim Bars’, I can definitely see myself using them quite a bit. And I can recommend them.

    Strong, solid, trim bar

I do a lot of hardwood replacement and related renovation projects so I use a lot of pry bars. If you need a trim bar, these are a pretty good choice. They are a bit beefier than average. This doesn’t just mean they can pry a bit better, but they can take a more solid blow from a hammer without jumping as much. I’m giving them 5 stars because they are a well designed tool and higher quality than your average trim bar. That said, there’s a number of very minor things I’m not a fan:1 – I love tools that have a ruler! I tend to put markings on about every flat tool I’ve got cause you always seem to need that tape when its across the room. So, great that these guys included it — sorta. They stopped at 4″?! I really wish they’d continued some basic lines the length of the bar.2 – The nail puller embedded in the crooked end is nice, but its the same both directions. I’d prefer one side be wider to handle larger nails better.3 – Both ends have sharp beveled edges. This can be great when you really need to get into a really tight spot. But too sharp and you end up marring surrounding materials or, worse, accidentally cutting into walls & surfaces you intended to slide along. If you are used to trim bars, you probably know whether you want edges this sharp (I usually don’t). If you are not used to trim bars, I suggest starting with a less edgy model and working up to this pro tool.4 – This bar is fully flat. That makes it more difficult to use in many situations than a bar with a slight bend. Other than actually prying up flooring, I’m not sure when I ever prefer a trim bar with no bend. (I really want to take a star off for this but won’t cause maybe others use it differently. But think about how you pry, and especially hammer/pry, with a trim bar before you buy this one.)

    Great for light duty tasks

These are versatile and solid pry bars with some additional functions like nail puller, bottle opener, and a short ruler. They are made of spring steel and about 1mm thick. They came with sharp edges that make them easy to wedge in for trim removal. I was a bit disappointed to see some persistent rust on the exposed metal but I understand this is a tool to be roughed up.Overall I’m pleased with these light duty pry bars especially for the price point.

These are great! Very durable for such lightweight pry bars! The ends are incredibly sharp on them so getting in between pieces that have glue or seal on them was so easy! I had no issues prying up this tabletop and even as much as I pushed and pulled on the bar they stayed completely straight! Definitely great for the tool bag to keep handy! (They worked great with drywall removal too!) – Definitely would get these again! 10/10 a win for me!

I have been pleased with everything Spec Ops I own, including this trim bar.I live in an old house I’m always working on, and removing trim is a common occurrence. A good trim bar or two is essential for getting it off in good enough shape to reuse it, without damaging the wall behind it.It’s made of tough steel I don’t have to worry about bending like some other cheapo bars I own.The sharp ends are just right for getting behind trim to pry it off.Plenty of nail pulling options.A bottle opener?

Must have tool for interior trim work

These little trim bars are excellent. Having two is a must. I have used a single in the past and while it works great, it’s too easy to break trim when trying to remove it. With two I can pull up on the end and use the second to free up the trim a bit further down and then walk the two until the section is loose. These are well made and look pretty cool too.

    Strong glazing type bars

These type of bars are one of my favorite go to tools for the last 30 years that I’ve spent in my construction career. They are super versatile, lightweight (nail bag worthy) and this pair seems super well made with more features than the regular ones available. They flex but don’t bend, they’re thin and strong, and have a durable powder coat like finish. Great set.

Too flimsy for a pry bar

I have a small 6″ pry bar that has always been my “go-to” on small projects. I figured this pry bar set would be a similar size, but able to tackle slightly larger projects. However… On the first project I got this out for, it was a major let down. The nail puller hole is too close to the end to create a significant fulcrum. In addition I felt this pry bar starting to give trying to pull out a 2-1/2″ trim nail. I ended up going to get my old 6″ prybar to finish the project. I still think these will be beneficial and will out perform my little 6″ when trying to get baseboard off the walls. Time will tell, but so far…I’m disappointed.

Smaller can be better when it comes to pry bars when you’re working with trim and many tasks that don’t involve full demolition. Top Quality

These are top quality pry tools. There are similar bars out there but these are the best I’ve seen. The finish is fantastic. Typically pry tools like these have a cheap, thin paint but these are seem to have a heavy baked on finish. All the lettering is inset so it won’t easily be scraped off. When I was a kid we called these “hive tools.” We used them for all sorts of things but ordered them from a company where my father bought beekeeping supplies. When it comes to prying off trim, it is always nice to work with several pry tools at the same time in order to work your way along, prying from two points at the same time to free the trim without breaking it. Great that they included two in one pack. The price may be a little higher than I’d like to pay but these are quality tools. And it’s great that 3% is donated to veterans.

    well designed prybar.

I love when someone does something right! This prybar has all sorts of notches to pry nails. I love the durable painted finish that will do an excellent job of not rusting. The two ends have a good edge, not too sharp, yet pleasantly blunted to be very functional. It even has a bottle cap opener that would be handy for prying other things. I am glad this comes as a set. I gave one to a friend. He was excited to get it and sonwill you if you decide to purchase one. Think of this as a marine seal team or army ranger type tool. This is stout, well designed, and will get the job done.

Another quality tool from Spec Ops

I recently ordered a precision screwdriver kit from Spec Ops, and I was amazed with the quality. Each of the 6 screwdrivers in the set is made out of high quality materials that should last for years, and the screwdrivers are also magnetic. I have been using them whenever I need to work with small screws. So when I saw these trim bars from Spec Ops, I did not hesitate to order them. I ordered these to remove numerous nails that were left in the walls all over my home from the previous owner. They have worked perfectly for that purpose. Later I will use these to remove trim pieces and part of my hardwood floor that I plan to replace. These trim bars are thin but very strong. I don’t expect them to ever bend or get damaged no matter what task I am using them for. The integrated ruler on each bar is a nice feature that I have already used.

    Pulled baseboard right off wall

The edge of these trim bars are extremely thin while remaining sturdy; I was able to press right into the backing of my baseboard to pull it off the wall. They are durable enough to act as a hammer in a pinch, as any good tool should.

I’m liking them better with use

So, basically a trim tool. Nothing special there. Maybe a bit short, but works just fine. Also, an OK set of integrated nail pullers. Nice touch. What is winning me over is that enamel paint or whatever that stuff is. It is a nice rugged coating that does not scratch easily. Also, that coating makes it so the trim bar, except for the sharpened ends, doesn’t scratch stuff. That’s what I’m liking – not scratching stuff. Also – yet another bottle opener. This thing has so many edges that you can use to slap off a bottle cap. Yet they designed in a bottle opener too. Sure, why not.

    Multifaceted well-built tool

A nice prying tool for both trim and nails that feels just right in your hand. The tool does not feel flimsy or on the verge of snapping when using. It also has a built in ruler and bottle opener to celebrate the end of your job. It is also a nice little bonus that some of the proceeds go to veterans.

    Well made. Nice design

This is a solid and well made trim pry bar. It’s good for pulling off door casings and baseboards. It can also be used for pulling nails as well. It’s pretty small but works for small casings where you just need to tap in with a hammer and use your hand to wedge out. It works as intended and has a bottle opener built in. What’s better than popping open a cold one whole yanking off moldings?

    This but strong

At first, I thought these were too thin but they are actually very strong. The thinness is perfect to get behind moldings compared to my other pry bars. So glad I got this for when I am doing stuff around the house. I would highly recommend these for when you are doing any kind of trim work.

One good one, not sure what’s that is

So I bought the two pack. They do feel sturdy. One looks great, the other is painted over something. Maybe it’s glue, rust, not sure. I assume it will serve it’s purpose, was hoping for better quality control.

    Blue in Tan Coating

I like some of the cutouts. I was excited because it wasn’t that horrible blue like the competitors however after a few useses I started to see blue marks from the blue undercoating. It’s not nearly as bad granted but I will not be purchasing these again.

Read all of the description before you buy.

I was searching for a bar to remove cedar shingles and was somehow how directed to this item. This bar might work well when working with trim but is too short for what I need. I should have returned but thought I would try to use. By then too late to return. If you are buying this , read all of the words.

I like the fact that this is made so well. Doesn’t bend of flex like the cheap versions I’ve tried. And it’s coyote tan. Who doesn’t like coyote tan???

Does what it is supposed to do.

Had to repair some rot around a front door. Since the siding was cedar shakes, I needed a way to get under the shingle and pull the nails out. All of the tools to get that done were way too long and expensive. Since this guy is a little too short to reach the nails under a full sized shingle, I elected to use my multitool and cut the damaged shingle about a half inch below the shingle above it. This allowed me to tuck this tool neatly under the shingle, pry it up a bit and then hook the nail with the tooland then beat on it with a hammer until the nail came out. I was impressed with the durability of the tool and quickly liberated all the the damaged shingles without damage to the others. I of course wore eye protection, as everyone should when working with tools like these.

    Lightweight

Appears at first to be nicely made and of high quality. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be very rugged when removing cedar siding from our home. It dented rather easily and the sharp edges dulling quickly. Probably a nice tool for small jobs.
